SAVE THE DATE - 2021 Oregon Heritage Virtual Summit: Collaboration is Key! April 29-30

We know all the reasons to partner with other groups and individuals- to reach new audiences with our missions, create lasting impacts, and increase the return on our investments of time and money. But let's be honest, true collaboration that is mutually beneficial is process driven. It takes time and commitment, and it doesn't happen immediately. As communities across Oregon do the hard work of recovering from COVID-19, it's more important than ever to use our resources strategically and collaborate rather than compete. The 2021 Heritage Summit will focus on understanding needs, priorities, and opportunities, in order to root heritage work in local communities. True collaboration can help us make history visible and heritage organizations even more relevant.

We are excited to announce Trina Michelle Robinson as the Keynote Speaker for the 2021 Summit. Trina was originally scheduled as the Keynote for our 2020 Heritage Conference that was cancelled due to the pandemic. Trina will share the story that she revealed when touring the country with The Moth Mainstage: her exploration of her family's enslaved ancestry, their liberation and migration to Chicago. Her mission is to help people of all backgrounds connect to one another through storytelling, with the hope we can see ourselves in each other. She will also discuss the research behind her story, how she has processed what she has learned through storytelling and her commitment to raising the voices of marginalized people everywhere.

We have made the decision to move the Summit to a virtual format and are looking forward to the creative ways to engage everyone. For more information contact heritage.info at oregon.gov<mailto:heritage.info at oregon.gov>.

Oregon Main Street offers free sustainable funding webinar series

While these webinars are geared towards Main Street organizations, fundraising is an issue for all non profit organizations and we encourage heritage organizations to check them out as well.

Main Street organizations must be solvent and sustainable to continue playing their critical role in building strong communities and local economies. Oregon, Washington, Colorado, and Wyoming Main Street programs are teaming up to offer a series of webinars and discussions that outline traditional Main Street funding sources, provide best practices and innovative ideas, and encourage you to map out your own sustainable funding plan. Each morning will consist of a 45-minute webinar, after which attendees will be invited to attend a follow-up discussion using breakout rooms. The webinars will be recorded. All webinars take place at 10:00 a.m. Pacific/11:00 a.m. Mountain. Please register in advance:

Application Available for Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions

Application Available for Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions!
Due: January 15, 2021
Maximum funding: $15,000
Funding for: Preservation assessments, planning, and supplies; Professional development on preservation & access topics
More information:https://www.neh.gov/grants/preservation/preservation-assistance-grants-smaller-institutions

Preservation Assistance Grants help small and mid-sized cultural institutions improve their ability to preserve and care for their significant humanities collections. Applicants must draw on the knowledge of consultants whose preservation skills and experience are related to the types of collections and the nature of the activities on which their projects focus. When assessing the preservation needs of library, museum, or archival holdings, applicants should seek a consultant whose specialty is appropriate for the nature of their collections and who is knowledgeable about the preservation of collections in these types of institutions.

The program encourages applications from small and mid-sized institutions that have never received an NEH grant; community colleges, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and Tribal Colleges and Universities; and Native American tribes and Native Alaskan and Native Hawaiian organizations with significant humanities collections. Furthermore, organizations or collections that represent the contributions of under-represented communities are highly encouraged.

Updates for 2021:
Applicants planning for activities aligned with the Agency initiative, A More Perfect Union, may apply for up to $15,000. New sample narratives can be found on the program resource page

Community exhibit at Talent Historical Society saves family treasures from wildfire

The Almeda Fire that burned through Jackson County destroyed the homes of thousands of people. Some people lost everything. The Talent Historical Society was spared and it turns out, they are offering a glimmer of hope for some of those folks that lost so much. The Historical Society had a community Dia de los Muertos altar on exhibit that included photos and personal family items from the community. Now, some of those items are some of the only personal items they have left.
