Oregon Heritage is offering emergency response and salvage tool for collections for free

The Emergency Response and Salvage Wheel is a convenient tool to help those responding to or recovering from a disaster.

Oregon Heritage is offering these for free as long as supplies last. If you would like one, email heritage.info at oregon.gov<mailto:heritage.info at oregon.gov> and send the address where it should be sent and we will get it in the mail to you.

To see what the wheel entails, visit here<https://store.culturalheritage.org/site/index.php?app=ecom&ns=prodshow&ref=FAIC-1> for a description.

Again, it's FREE so please do not hesitate to ask for one as we really want to get these out into your hands as you respond to disasters affecting your communities.

Please be safe and take care of people first. Oregon Heritage will be working on recovery and resilience resources so stay tuned (while also staying safe).

Glimmers of good news for some of Oregon's heritage resources amidst the fires

Oregon Heritage has been hearing some confirmation of some of Oregon's historic resources that were either saved by heroic efforts or pure chance.

  * Goodpasture Bridge, a well-known and loved covered bridge located on the McKenzie River, was saved by local folks spraying it with foam while the fire raged around it and them. We saw some video of this effort here<https://www.facebook.com/OregonHeritage/posts/4193349444015733?__xts__%5b0%5d=68.ARA5Y9LdhF_7A-9GRyhvhBPIui-F-nToyhrDdyKv1A5mHkX2wNzK7kOHFUwnTl2YzC55NHt9HPubrr8BVlgiXLsJf-j4qh35pHVzccJQyJEd3ZRtloc5YcUKT3GWDzA6PKOnAKGqnDWdL_ZtFW-8WL82kBUY44CHhpnkxM6lC4RS1H5hor8PZG2ip-EXxQsrazRYTQrKEODfCF2ChBNUJ0AZS6yyfwTGZ2V2C8c-LAYg0YbJJ8zy4dINdoQkMRnYIhNLC37oqBKFiW5_KRT-qrBEe5BxXTQWYJ26Gz9IsRwwH5Gc-uLIfNRTQVqWAIsP-ssotApM8-JkO3T-oYC8j5p2N8zSDfxnWl0&__tn__=-R> (thanks to Restore Oregon for sharing the video on their social media).

  * Our staff heard from contacts in Talent that the Talent Historical Society remained safe through the fire.

As we hear more we will be sure to share here and on our Facebook page (@oregonheritage<https://www.facebook.com/oregonheritage/>). If you have stories to share with us from your community about a historic resource that survived, please let know by emailing heritage.info at oregon.gov<mailto:heritage.info at oregon.gov> so we can all celebrate the small victories.

Thank you for all that you do and please stay safe during these uncertain times.

State Library releases 2020-2023 Strategic Plan, which includes a partnership with Oregon Heritage Commission

The State Library of Oregon released their 2020-2023 strategic plan<https://www.oregon.gov/library/operations/Documents/State%20Library%20Strategic%20Plan%20-%20full%20version.pdf>. It's important to note that in their strategic focus area to enhance strategic partnerships and engagement, it specifically calls out the Oregon Heritage Commission in the key initiatives on page. 8:

"Develop and grow a Northwest heritage network that provides a robust system for access and long-term management of local digital collections in partnership with the Washington State Library and Oregon Heritage Commission."

The Oregon Heritage Commission has focused on a statewide digitization initiative for heritage organizations and this is an important step forward. Stay tuned!

AHC features LGBTQ historic sites in Portland in free online event Sept. 12
*the following was taken from AHC's website here<https://architecturalheritagecenter.z2systems.com/np/clients/architecturalheritagecenter/event.jsp;jsessionid=C70BA3AE56FD6058AB4A51A82F723DD4-n1?event=4314>.

Recently, the home of Walter Cole, better known as Darcelle XV, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The house, built for Elmer and Linnie Miller in 1896 and located in Portland's Eliot neighborhood, is recognized for its outstanding architecture. Meanwhile, the Darcelle's XV club in Northwest Portland has also been nominated to the National Register and is awaiting listing as Oregon's first historic site so designated for its ties to the LGBTQ community. In this panel discussion, we will bring together a few of the people that made these historic nominations possible for a discussion about the challenges of the nomination process and how both the house and club nominations required different approaches. Joining us will be Don Horn, who spearheaded the two nominations among his many endeavors; Kristen Minor, who completed much of the work on the two nominations, and Robert Olguin of the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office who can shed light on the challenges and opportunities of a National Register listing. For the first time ever, the AHC will host this public program via Zoom, allowing ample time for audience Q & A and panelist discussion. We hope that this program helps us to consider what other LGBTQ sites in the Portland area, might warrant historic recognition.

This program is presented in conjunction with our current photo exhibit, Darcelle XV at Home<http://www.visitahc.com/current-exhibits/>, closing on September 26. Registration is required. Attendance to this virtual event is limited. Register here<https://architecturalheritagecenter.z2systems.com/np/clients/architecturalheritagecenter/event.jsp;jsessionid=C70BA3AE56FD6058AB4A51A82F723DD4-n1?event=4314>.

Registrants will receive an automated email with the meeting link and a follow-up email with the link one hour prior to the event. Ticket types: Free, $5, $10, $15 or $20 donation to help make this and future AHC education programming possible.
