One week left to nominate a person, organization, or project for an Oregon Heritage Excellence Award!

Only ONE WEEK left to apply for an Oregon Heritage Excellence Award. Deadline is January 27, 2022, 11:59 p.m.

The Oregon Heritage Excellence Awards recognize individuals, businesses and organizations for outstanding efforts on behalf of Oregon heritage, drawing public attention to these efforts, and raising the quality of heritage‐oriented activities. Awards winners will be featured in videos and presented during the 2022 Virtual Oregon Heritage Conference, April 27‐29. The awards are presented by Oregon Heritage, a division of the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department that houses the Oregon Heritage Commission and the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office.

The Oregon Heritage Excellence Awards honor those that have made the most of available resources and skills and are given for exceptional and meritorious work by organizations, businesses or individuals. Nominations are encouraged for organizations and projects of all sizes and heritage purposes and for volunteers and professionals from all heritage sectors. The Sally Donovan Award for Historic Cemeteries will specifically be awarded for excellence in work preserving Oregon historic cemeteries.

Action over and above the ordinary call of duty is an award prerequisite. Special consideration is given to the development of new ideas, approaches and innovations. The mere fulfillment of routine functions does not justify an award. Previous award winners will be honored a second time only if their new work represents a major improvement above the level for which they were previously honored. We recognize that volunteers are the backbone of heritage preservation work in Oregon and want to celebrate those standout volunteers that have contributed their time and skills to help your organization persist and thrive. This new category gives us a chance to help you celebrate your standout volunteer at the state level with a certificate and inclusion in a compilation video of all those submitted.

Four Oregon Heritage grants open for applications

Oregon Heritage just opened up four grants for applications: Museum Grant, Historic Cemeteries Grant, Diamonds in the Rough Grant, and Preserving Oregon Grant.

Museum Grant – Deadline: April 13, 2022

The Oregon Heritage Commission is offering grants<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Pages/Grants.aspx#eight> to qualified museums for collections, heritage tourism, and education and interpretation projects. Awards typically range between $2,000 and $10,000.

Museums may apply for a variety of projects. Collections projects may include cataloging, archival storage, disaster preparedness, and conservation. Heritage tourism projects may include museum marketing and promotions, enhancing visitor experience, and training for museum staff. Education and interpretation projects may include exhibits, online education, school classes, workshops, and camps. Museums may also partner with other organizations for projects that might be outside of the museum, but still meet the museum’s mission. It is possible to enfold response to COVID-19 challenges into appropriate projects.

The online grant application is simple to use and includes plenty of support. Historic Cemeteries Grant – Deadline: April 13, 2022

The Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Pages/Commissions.aspx#OCHC> is offering grants for qualified historic cemeteries. The annual grants<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Pages/Grants.aspx#six> fund projects that preserve historic cemeteries. Projects funded in the past include marker repair workshops, fencing, signs, interpretive panels and brochures, security lighting, access improvements, records management, and more.

Awards typically range between $1,000 and $8,000, but have been higher. Anyone may apply for a grant. Projects must be related to historic cemeteries listed with the Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries. Recent projects include marker repair and workshops in several cemeteries, installations of signs and informational kiosks, a preservation plan, and a fence replacement.

“Our goal is to preserve Oregon’s historic cemeteries and offer support throughout the application process,” said historic cemeteries program coordinator Kuri Gill. Last year’s awards included projects in in Benton, Clackamas, Columbia, Jackson, Klamath, Linn, Malheur, Marion, Polk, Tillamook, Umatilla, and Yamhill Counties.

Preserving Oregon Grant - Letter of Intent Deadline: April 13, 2022

The Preserving Oregon Grants<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Pages/Grants.aspx#ten> fund preservation of historic properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Work may include non-maintenance preservation like window repair, roof work, foundation projects, plumbing, and electrical needs.

Preserving Oregon Grants<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Pages/Grants.aspx#ten> can also fund archaeology projects for significant work contributing toward identifying, preserving and/or interpreting archaeological sites. Archaeology projects by Southern Oregon University, Willamette University and the Vanport Placemarking Project were funded last year.

Diamonds in the Rough Grant - Deadline: May 10, 2022

The Diamonds in the Rough Grants<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Pages/Grants.aspx#five> help restore or reconstruct the facades of buildings that have been heavily altered over the years. These grants return buildings to their historic appearance and potentially qualify them for historic register designation (local or national). Recent façade projects have taken place in Lincoln City, Oregon City, Rhododendron, and Wallowa.

The first phase of applications for Business Oregon’s ARPA Live Event Recovery grant program will go live next Monday, January 24, at 8 am and are due Feb. 9.

Historic houses of worship, from prairie churches to urban synagogues, are the bedrocks that continue to sustain us as a people, uniting us in service and celebration.
