Federal Increases for History and Museums

Congress passed a FY 2022 omnibus budget bill. The National Endowment for Humanities received $180 million, an increase of $12.5 million, the largest increase in a decade. The Institute of Museum and Library Services received $268 million, an $11 million increase for the agency overall. The National Archives and Records Administration received $388 million, an $11 million increase. And NHPRC received $7 million, a half million dollar increase. Important Eligibility Information

  *   Only resources that are both State owned and listed in the National Register of Historic Places (including National Historic Landmarks) individually or as contributing to a listed district at the time of application are eligible for this program.
  *   Buildings, structures, sites, districts, and objects considered significant for their association with people, places, or events between the earliest known resources and December 31,1800 may be considered as associated with the "founding of the nation."
  *   While the resources to be supported by this program must be owned by a State government, eligible applicants may also include local governments, non-profit organizations, public and non-profit institutions of higher education, and tribes that are partnering with States.
  *   Eligible costs for this program include architectural/engineering services (not to exceed 20% of the grant award) and physical preservation projects.

Letitia Carson Legacy Project Intern opportunity

Letitia Carson Legacy Project Intern (Part Time, 20 hours/week)
Oregon Black Pioneers (OBP) seeks a talented student intern to support the development of a digital history website for the Letitia Carson Legacy Project (LCLP).

Oregon Black Pioneers is Oregon's only historical society dedicated to preserving and presenting the experiences of African Americans statewide. Since 1993, OBP has illuminated the seldom-told history of people of African descent in Oregon through historical research, original exhibitions and publications, public programs, and collaborative projects which commemorate and preserve our state's unique African American heritage.

About the Letitia Carson Legacy Project:
The LCLP is a partnership between OBP, Black Oregon Land Trust, Oregon State University, and the Corvallis-Albany chapter of the NAACP. The LCLP was created in 2020 to tell the story of Black pioneer Letitia Carson, one of the earliest Black women to settle in Oregon and the plaintiff in one of early Oregon's most unique legal cases.
The LCLP aims to use the original Soap Creek Valley land where Letitia Carson once lived as:

  *   A satellite education space for Oregon Black Pioneers to interpret the experiences of 19th century Black Oregonians
  *   A working agricultural space site for Black Oregon Land Trust to provide opportunities for contemporary Black farmers
  *   A place for honoring the area's original Kalapuya inhabitants and learning from their knowledge.

Internship Description:
Under the supervision of OBP, and with guidance from other LCLP partners, the LCLP intern will develop a digital history website using the Omeka online exhibits platform. This website will provide enhanced public access to, and interpretation of, the primary source materials which reveal Letitia Carson's story.

OBP staff and OSU faculty will identify the themes and materials to use for the website. The intern will work with this team to create appropriate metadata for these materials, upload them to the site, and create the content and the narrative for each section of the site. The intern may also assist the team with outreach to other partners, stakeholders, and the public.
These primary source materials have already been compiled from are local archives, libraries, and museums, however some additional research may be part of this project.

Required Skills:

  *   Academic training in a relevant field (e.g., public history, library science, web design, etc.)
  *   Understanding of how to apply subject headings using controlled vocabularies
  *   Understanding of digital design (previous experience using Omeka preferred)
  *   Ability to work independently with regular project check in meetings

The ideal candidate has

  *   A commitment to racial equity and the principles of inclusion and accessibility.
  *   Excellent written and oral communication skills, copyediting abilities, and digital literacy.
  *   Firsthand familiarity working within Oregon's African American or Indigenous communities.
Hours

  *   Up to 20 hours per week. Exact workdays and hours flexible but candidate must be available for weekly virtual meetings, daily emails, and periodic phone calls.
Travel

  *   0-5%
Location

  *   Remote, Oregon. Willamette Valley and Portland Metro-area applicants preferred.
Compensation

  *   $20.00/hour, up to 20 hours/week. Not to exceed 230 hours.

Requires a bachelor's degree in political science, environmental science, anthropology, archeology, business or other related field or equivalent experience.

Certificate in Tribal Relations or equivalent a plus. Having a Native perspective or lived experience a plus.
