2022 Fall Workshop: Change Management for Heritage Organizations

Change and disruption have become the norms in recent years due to a variety of factors impacting our world, our nation, and our communities. Change impacts everyone and yet everyone deals with change differently. Rather than constantly reacting to change, there are strategies to anticipate and prepare for change both personally and organizationally. Utilizing existing and emerging change management principles and tools, this interactive workshop will empower and equip participants with a toolkit to develop their own customized approach to change that can be directly applied to the unique needs of their organization moving forward.
Presenter:
The workshops will be presented by Joseph Thouvenel, a seasoned change management professional who has applied his expertise in both higher education and healthcare settings. An experienced and collaborative leader, Joe loves to empower and equip others to realize their potential and achieve success especially during times of transition and disruption. In his current role, Joe works with leaders and teams throughout Providence Health and Services to build capacity for change. Through collaboration, coaching, and meeting facilitation, Joe strives to widen the circle of those who influence strategic change to include people with diverse perspectives and from all levels of an organization. Additionally, Joe has worked and partnered with a number of non-profit organizations in the areas of change readiness, strategy, and program implementation. He is also a Gallup-certified Strengths Coach and is a trained facilitator for Leading Reflective Conversations through Oregon Humanities.

Oregon Heritage Commission to meet Oct. 23-24 in Talent and online
The Oregon Heritage Commission will meet Oct. 23-24 in Talent and online. The agenda<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Documents/Oregon%20Heritage%20Commission_Oct23_24.pdf> includes a field trip on Oct. 23 to the Phoenix Historical Society and the Talent Historical Society and the business meeting will take place on Oct. 24 at the Talent Historical Society.
The business meeting will include information on the Oregon Main Street Impact Report and the Upper Floor Study, overview of the LCIS land acknowledgement recommendations, and presentations from southern Oregon heritage organizations. The Heritage Commission's nine members represent a diversity of cultural, geographic, and institutional interests. The Commission is the primary agency for coordination of heritage activities in the state. This includes carrying out the Oregon Heritage Plan<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Documents/2020_Oregon_Heritage_Plan.pdf>, increasing efficiency and avoiding duplication among interest groups, developing plans for coordination among agencies and organizations, encouraging tourism related to heritage resources, and coordinating statewide anniversary celebrations.
The group meets four-six times per year in changing locations around the state and will offer virtual options to attend meetings. Commissioners are also asked to occasionally participate in meetings or events in their regions and work on other projects outside of meeting time. Appointed Commissioners are reimbursed for their travel and related expenses while conducting official commission business.

Caring for Oregon's historic cemeteries ahead of All-Hallows' Eve
Acts of cemetery vandalism increase in frequency each October. As Halloween approaches, animated headlines often promote avenues to celebrate and have a little spooky fun. Unfortunately, sometimes this highlighting of perceived scary places and spaces can result in threats to and the destruction of historic cemeteries. What remains of someone's idea of fun could mean a desecrated final resting place for someone's family member and a cemetery with little resources available to repair the damage.
The Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries (OCHC) annually promotes the celebration of Historic Cemetery Month during October. This designation is a reminder that cemeteries are important, irreplaceable spaces for reverence and solemnity, for education and history, for closure and peace. Caring for these spaces means educating the public and creating stewards of these hallowed grounds for the future.
Oregon's communities have found creative ways to tackle some of Halloween's biggest vandalism challenges. Taking part in overnight watch or patrol opportunities during the month of October can also be a way to give back. Volunteering for a cemetery can be an inspirational and demystifying introduction to these spaces for children and adults alike.

OCHC promotes the respectful use of Oregon's cemeteries at all times, not just in October. OCHC maintains a list of all historic cemeteries in the state. A cemetery must include the burial of at least one person who died 75 years before today's date to qualify as historic. The seven-member appointed commission helps people and organizations document, preserve and promote designated historic cemeteries statewide.

NAO and Pacific University Partner To Grow Nonprofit Capacity With a New Master of Nonprofit Leadership Program

The new master's degree program will be run by Pacific University, with guidance from faculty and an advisory council from the nonprofit world. Post Fire Symposium
The Governor's Post-fire Research and Monitoring Team is organizing a Post-fire Research and Monitoring Symposium.  Presenters will share what they are learning -- or hoping to learn--  from recent westside wildfires in Oregon. The Symposium will provide practitioners and policy-makers an opportunity to discuss how new discoveries can inform future decisions, and it aims to promote collaboration between institutions/agencies involved in post-fire research and monitoring. CCAHA is pleased to announce that, thanks to renewed and expanded grant funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), we are able to offer a limited number of subsidized assessments. These assessments, valued at over $5,000 each, will be offered for a significantly discounted cost to qualifying institutions.
Applications are now open for assessments in two categories: Preservation Needs Assessments/Preservation Plans and Risk Assessments/Emergency Plans. Oregon Frontier Chamber of Commerce Wins $5,000 in the Inaugural Oregon Main Street "Open Door" Award
The Oregon Frontier Chamber of Commerce, the Oregon Main Street Network's pilot Rural Regional Main Street program, was the recipient of $5,000 in the first Open Door Pitch Contest hosted by Oregon Main Street at the finale of the Oregon Main Street Conference on October 7, 2022, in Klamath Falls. The Dallas Downtown Association received $3,000 as the second-place finalist. AARP Oregon co-sponsored the event.
The Oregon Frontier Chamber of Commerce will use their award for a creative placemaking and youth engagement process to generate ideas and business concepts for vacant buildings on main street in multiple communities. Participating buildings will have open doors during community events to help plant the seed for new business development. "We are thrilled to kick off the "Imagine Your Business Here" campaign," said K'Lynn Lane, executive director of the Oregon Frontier Chamber of Commerce,  "and we are so grateful for the opportunity to open the door and plant the seeds to growing stronger, sustainable communities and creating new innovative Main Street Spaces."
The Dallas Downtown Association will use their award to create their first-ever summer movie series featuring movies filmed in Oregon and targeted at bringing kids and families to downtown. "The Dallas Downtown Association is excited and honored to have received the support from other Main Street organizations in our effort to further enhance Downtown Dallas," said Tyler Ferrari, Economic Development Specialist, City of Dallas. "We look forward to using this funding to provide events for all of Dallas to gather and enjoy visual arts, and we would love for everyone to come and visit Dallas next summer to enjoy a movie night with us!"
Oregon Main Street Network communities help create inclusive and welcoming environments that make all feel that they belong and are invited into the community. The Open Door Pitch contest was conceived to encourage and support these efforts. Communities were invited to submit an application to share their idea for a project that they have been wanting to do to make their organization or downtown more welcoming but they just didn't have the funding to move the idea forward. Five programs were then selected to make their pitch before an expert panel with representatives from AARP Oregon, Oregon Transportation Growth Management, Place It!, and Foundry Collective who provided feedback to the contestants.  Final voting was by the audience.
