Is your heritage organization ready for the “Big One”? Did you participate in the Oregon ShakeOut Day last week? Whether it’s the eventual Cascadia or something smaller, being prepared for seismic activity in Oregon should an important component of disaster planning for your organization. Every year the Oregon Office of Emergency Management hosts the Great Oregon ShakeOut as a reminder to make space in your day to think about disaster preparations. This year, it was 10/19. We’d thought we’d follow up with some resources.

What can you do as an organization?

  1. Prepare your staff and volunteers.
     * Run a drop, cover, and hold on drill on ShakeOut day.<https://www.shakeout.org/oregon/>
     * Take some time to write out a Pocket Response Plan<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Documents/OC2C_PReP.doc> and set expectations who’s responsible for what things if a disaster occurs.
  2. Prepare your collections.
     * Conduct a collections inventory for insurance purposes with the guidance of Oregon Heritage MentorCorps.<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/oh/pages/mentorcorps.aspx>
     * Ensure seismic-safe mounting or storage where possible with straps, custom mounts, cradles, boxes, and shelving; both in exhibits and collections spaces. You can gain some inspiration from the Natural History Museum of Utah here.<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lp4vCPobTMo>
     * Seek a Oregon Heritage museum grant<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/oh/pages/grants.aspx> for supplies or planning services to help better prepare for disaster.
  3. Plan holistically.
