Oregon Heritage Commission report on Addressing Harmful Content in Collections
The 2020-2025 Oregon Heritage Plan<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Documents/2020_Oregon_Heritage_Plan.pdf> asks heritage organizations to move four goals forward: Include more Voices, Increase Access to Heritage, Promote the Value of Heritage, and Pursue Best Practices. The Commission uses these goals to prioritize initiatives, resources, technical assistance and support for heritage organizations.
The Commission's involvement with the Northwest Digital Heritage initiative has led to the creation of resources related to creating and cleaning up collection information<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Pages/TechnicalResources.aspx> and awareness of the impact, trauma, and triggering that can occur to visitors, staff, and volunteers when engaging with institutional records and collections. The Commission wanted to understand the scope of this trauma and identify recommendations, guides, resources, toolkits, and case studies related to addressing harmful content in their collections. This resulted in commissioned the following report:
Addressing Harmful Content in Collections:<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Documents/Report_Addressing_Harmful_Content_2024.pdf> A Report for the Oregon Heritage Commission to understand the scope of harm, trauma, and triggering that can occur to visitors, staff, and volunteers when engaging with institutional records and collections and how organizations are addressing harmful content in their collections.
Prepared by Rose Paquet, PhD, museum and cultural heritage consultant, public scholar and artist. She is the Cofounder and Co-director of The Incluseum.
This report was made possible in thanks to funding from the Oregon Cultural Trust.
Oregon Heritage is interested in hearing about more of this work being done in Oregon! If your organization is doing this important work, consider contacting Oregon Heritage at heritage.info at oprd.oregon.gov so that the Commission and staff can help highlight this work and suggest funding opportunities to help support this work. We are especially interested in projects that are being driven by or in partnership with impacted communities and/or projects in volunteer-run organizations.

Albina Preservation Initiative Announces the "Expanding the Black Preservation Movement in Oregon" Symposium to Take Place September 14, 2024 in Portland
Celebrating Black historic preservation in Oregon, the Albina Preservation Initiative<https://restoreoregon.org/the-albina-preservation-initiative/> (API) announces "Expanding the Black Preservation Movement in Oregon," a half-day symposium that seeks to discover and preserve Black stories and places, build relationships, recognize culturally-defined preservation efforts, and deepen partnerships. API is a collaboration of Oregon Black Pioneers<https://oregonblackpioneers.org/>, Moreland Resource Consulting<https://www.morelandresource.com/>, and Restore<https://restoreoregon.org/> Oregon<https://restoreoregon.org/>.
On Saturday, September 14, 2024, from 9:30 am - 1:30 pm, the symposium will take place in the Auditorium at Portland Community College - Cascade campus. The keynote address will lead off the event, followed by three panels of Oregon experts, and conclude with a community share out. Keynote speaker Brent Leggs<https://savingplaces.org/brent-leggs>, executive director of the African American<https://savingplaces.org/african-american-cultural-heritage> Cultural Heritage Action Fund<https://savingplaces.org/african-american-cultural-heritage> and senior vice president of the National Trust, is a dynamic national leader in the historic preservation movement. Mr. Leggs will provide context and inspiration for how Black culture and historic preservation are growing and flourishing on the national scale. “We are honored to bring Mr. Leggs to Oregon so we can learn from his exceptional work in this field, as well as share our combined work to preserve Oregon’s African American history,” says Kimberly Stowers Moreland of Moreland Resource Consulting.
“Not all histories are treated equally in the preservation field. Historic landmarks are typically designated based on their relationship to the dominant historical narrative of the area,” said Zachary Stocks, Oregon Black Pioneers’ Executive Director. “As a result, structures associated with people of color, women, immigrants, and LGBTQIA+ folks are often overlooked by preservation agencies.”
“This symposium is a great opportunity to highlight the work being done to preserve these often overlooked and underappreciated places and stories of the Black community,” adds Mariah Rocker, Oregon Black Pioneers’ Public Programs and Exhibits Manager.
“Restore Oregon’s strategic work<https://restoreoregon.org/restore-oregons-strategic-framework/> to amplify the untold stories, voices, and histories that are grounded in the physical spaces of Albina and throughout Oregon is a critical step in valuing these places so that future Oregonians can better understand, appreciate, and protect them,” said Nicole Possert, Executive Director of Restore Oregon.
This symposium is made possible by Restore Oregon, generous grants from the statewide Partners of the Oregon Cultural Trust, City of Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, and the Mellon Foundation (Just Futures Initiative) for the Pacific Northwest Just Futures Institute for Racial and Climate Justice, University of Oregon.

The Brief provides information on how to meet the goals of building codes while also preserving or minimizing alterations to the character-defining features, spaces, materials, and finishes of historic buildings. It presents an overview of the most widely adopted codes in the United States and their development and describes the specific provisions for historic buildings contained in these codes. It provides guidance for selecting the optimal code compliance method and suggests best practices for achieving code-compliant solutions that also allow for the preservation of a building’s historic character. While the Brief is primarily intended to apply to historic buildings, much of the information also applies to the rehabilitation of existing buildings.
Webinars on Preservation Brief 51 will be scheduled in Fall 2024.
