Oregon SHPO is hiring! Seeking Cultural Resource Analyst (Built Environment)
Join our team as a Cultural Resource Analyst, where your decisions carry substantial weight, influencing the state and agency's relationships with stakeholders and playing a crucial role in preserving our state's invaluable historic resources. The Cultural Resource Analyst is a subject-matter expert in federal and state cultural resource law and professional historic preservation practice for built environment cultural resources, including buildings, structures, sites, objects, and infrastructure. This position works collaboratively with Tribal governments and federal, state, and local government agencies and their representatives to assist agencies with fulfilling their responsibilities under Section 106 of the 1966 National Historic Preservation Act and Oregon state cultural resource laws. Your expertise will be crucial in identifying significant historic properties and assessing the impact of projects on the unique qualities that make these places special.
Responsibilities include providing timely and professional written guidance and recommendations to partners, active participation in working group meetings, and on-site evaluation of historic properties. You will also represent Oregon on teams to create inter-agency agreements, including Memorandums of Agreement to mitigate adverse impacts on historic properties and Programmatic Agreements that guide an agency's approach to preserving important places across the state. The Compliance Specialist also leads in creating public education materials, delivering presentations, and spearheading projects focused on assessing, developing, and implementing innovative work processes and systems. Join us in making a meaningful impact on preserving our state's cultural heritage.
This position is “hybrid,” allowing for work-from-home opportunities, but does require regularly scheduled in-office work at the agency’s Salem, OR office and day and overnight travel to off-site locations across the state at least once a month, and often more frequently. Travel expenses are reimbursed.

2024 Oregon Heritage Conference Highlight: Hazard mitigation demonstration opportunities
Debating whether or not to show up on Wednesday in Forest Grove for the 2024 Oregon Heritage Conference<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Pages/heritageconference.aspx>? If you don’t, you’ll miss our planned demonstrations, only scheduled for Wednesday morning, April 17th. These demos will have you thinking about easy solutions to address potential hazards in your collection!
Defensible Space for Wildfire Risk
Partners at the Oregon Department of Forestry will demonstrate decision processes that wildland firefighters go through to determine if a facility can be saved during a wildfire. They’ll share easy actions you can take at your facilities to make firefighters’ decisions easier. Only you can help prevent wildfire, and protect your collection. Sponsored by Keep Oregon Green.
Collection Hazards Assessments with OSHA
Oregon OSHA has been providing free assessments of museum collections around the state to ensure that staff and volunteers are aware of the risks within their own collection. This assessment process will be demonstrated including the use of an XRF machine for detecting heavy metals. Afterward, you can ask questions of our OSHA representative and get an assessment scheduled for your sites!
Both demonstrations will take place at the A.T. Smith House and are included in the full conference registration.
Registration is open now! Check out all of the conference information including the schedule at a glance, conference session descriptions, and more here<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Pages/heritageconference.aspx>.

Oregon Main Street Adds Two New Affiliated Main Street Communities to the Network
Oregon Main Street (OMS) has accepted the City Club of Forest Grove and Main Street Cascade Locks at the Affiliated Main Street level of the OMS Network.
Communities participating at this level have a high degree of commitment to using the nationally recognized place-based Main Street Approach™ methodology to create lasting impact in enhancing their historic downtowns.
Affiliated Main Street level communities must have a cohesive core of historic or older commercial and mixed-use buildings that represent the community’s architectural heritage and may include compatible in-fill. They must also have a sufficient mass of businesses, buildings, and density to be effective, as well as be a compact and pedestrian-oriented district.
The primary emphasis of the Affiliated Main Street level is to provide technical assistance to program’s in their formative years. Acceptance into this level allows communities to participate in training, community assessments, technical assistance, and receive local capacity building support. There isn’t a fee to participate in the Oregon Main Street Network.
The selection process included submitting an application that describes their district, previous efforts to improve downtown, readiness to implement the Main Street Approach™, board development efforts, in addition to other criteria.
Currently, there are 100 communities in Oregon participating in one of the four levels of the Oregon Main Street Network: Accredited Main Street, Designated Main Street, Affiliated Main Street, and Connected Communities. Both communities were represented by their cities at the Connected Communities level prior to being accepted at the Affiliated Main Street level. In Cascade Locks, a local Main Street group is just forming so the timing is good to benefit the assistance Oregon Main Street can provide. In Forest Grove, they have been exploring the right structure for the main street effort and found a willing partner in the City Club of Forest Grove.
Oregon Main Street is part of Oregon Heritage in Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. For questions, contact Oregon Main Street Coordinator Sheri Stuart, sheri.stuart at oprd.oregon.gov<mailto:sheri.stuart at oprd.oregon.gov>.

IMLS FY 2023 Annual Performance Report Highlights Strategic Partnerships and Key Achievements of Federally Funded Programs
The Institute of Museum and Library Services announced today that the agency's Annual Performance Report<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001n_7ZZoWO0Rm1ari1koxm1mAu-LHQQqU-rEmzd_kXWyikw298NVN_PpJlPgzJdOrrrRk3nYDHnxyTl280-3tqSeSWYFPpxoOgsfWehdaiq1G-4CMZM0aTi7R3whIzJVg7HyAWic3_Y2iBNgzBVyYBXNYrIhc51mYNRkmctqvwCRp75xYs8rf09fOl4N1_ALvznOIIbTJEATw=&c=U1dfyKvAa-WBd1m7lMqM-c0AtfODiLPfd4-LK__kVKC-gmmD1fCM3w==&ch=_c4WvNroMK_gQz179WTe5yP9NYVKB2jpw7_0fBnmV45vaVvwmtz8_w==> (APR) is now available for FY 2023. The report is an in-depth look at how IMLS aligns its strategic priorities with practice.
The APR reviews key impacts of the agency’s activities for FY 2023. Highlights from the report include:
* IMLS completed the pilot phase of the National Museum Survey (NMS), the first-ever annual federal survey to gather and share data about the essential work happening across the country in museums and cultural institutions. The effort has secured the future of the NMS, set to launch in early 2025.
* As part of IMLS’s continued IMLS 250 activities in recognition of America’s semiquincentennial, the agency partnered with PBS Books and Detroit Public Television to create a streaming series called “Visions of America: All Stories, All People, All Places.” For the series’ first season, the team produced three episodes that explore the history and stories in Miami, Seattle, and Kansas City that have contributed to America as we know it today.
* Under the President’s United We Stand initiative, IMLS was entrusted with the responsibility of developing a federal Information Literacy Taskforce focused on the trusted local institutions we serve to reinforce their existing community information networks and the best practices of civic institutions. In response to both Congress and the White House, IMLS is working to launch a community-centered program to address misunderstandings and support literacy and education in many areas, from finance, health, and climate to civic engagement and public safety.
* Under the National Museum of the American Latino Act, IMLS awarded more than $4 million to eight institutions through the agency’s new American Latino Museum Internship and Fellowship Initiative (ALMIFI). ALMIFI is designed to strengthen the institutional capacity of the American Latino Museum community and provide opportunities for internships and fellowships at American Latino museums for students enrolled in institutions of higher education, including Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs).
* IMLS developed the Agency’s first Learning Agenda in a published report “Learning Agenda: Research Questions to Guide IMLS Priorities, FY 2023–2026.” This is a research initiative that aims to deliver on IMLS’s mission to advance, support, and empower America’s museums, libraries, and related organizations through grantmaking, research, and policy development.
