SOLVE supports historic cemeteries spring cleanup events
SOLVE and the Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries (OCHC) are partnering up again to support Oregon Historic Cemetery Cleanup days.
Sign up to volunteer! Honor Oregon's rich history by restoring and maintaining its historic cemeteries. Volunteers will help with removing invasive plants, cleaning headstones, and general grounds maintenance-from April 11 through May 27. Find an opportunity at a cemetery near you on the SOLVE website<https://t.e2ma.net/click/j8rryl/v512rvyb/bqg4rbb>.
If you support a historic cemetery or know folks who do, you can still establish a cleanup event with SOLVE by contacting Estrella Valdez at estrella at solveoregon.org<mailto:estrella at solveoregon.org> or 971-346-2708.
SOLVE offers several resources to cemeteries that are registered for the event:

  * Free supplies like litter bags, gloves, safety vests and first aid kits.
  * Volunteer recruitment tools including event flyer templates, online registration, and promotion.
  *   Liability coverage and waivers.
  * Funding options for tools, plants, and disposal costs.
  * Advice on native plant species to plant for lower maintenance.
  *   Project planning assistance.
OCHC has many online resources including the How to Organize a Cemetery Clean Up Day<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Documents/HB13_how_to_organize_cleanup_day.pdf> Oregon Heritage Bulletin. For general cleanup day information visit www.oregonheritage.org<http://www.oregonheritage.org/>.

Understanding the Value of Museums, by John H. Falk, April 30, 12 pm, University of Oregon campus
Understanding the Value of Museums
Wednesday, April 30, 2025
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Lecture with John H. Falk, the Founder and CEO of the Institute for Learning Innovation and Emeritus Sea Grant Professor of Free-Choice Learning at Oregon State University.
The value of something is determined by users, not creators. Accordingly, the public value of a museum is disproportionately determined by how a museum's users perceive they benefit from interacting with the museum. From this perspective, museums create value by supporting meaningful museum experiences; experiences that result in enhanced feelings of personal, intellectual, social, and physical well-being. Understanding these ideas, once a nicety, is now a necessity if museum professionals want to be able to create effective experiences for a continuously evolving and increasingly diverse public, if museum leaders want to be able to persuasively communicate their value within an increasingly challenging public policy and funding landscape, if museums as organizations want to be able to flourish, let alone survive, the rapidly changing world we now live in.

NCSHPO has recently released 2 reports
NCSHPO has very recently released 2 reports. The most recent is the work of the Workforce Committee - which undertook the examination of employment trends in historic preservation. The other, represents the work of the SOI Standards Committee - and focuses on the efficacy of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties (in particular, the Standards for Rehabilitation).

Both reports include numerous recommendations for future discussion and further exploration.
