Northwest Digital Heritage reaches one million digital records of cultural heritage collections available to view online
People around Oregon and the world now have free access to search over one million digitized photographs, letters, documents, and more from around the Pacific Northwest. These historic and cultural materials are available in Northwest Digital Heritage, a website that searches the collections of over 300 regional libraries, museums, and cultural heritage organizations.
Northwest Digital Heritage is an online search portal that gathers records from the online collections of libraries, museums, universities, historical societies, and other organizations in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. The site was created in 2021 through a partnership between the Oregon Heritage Commission, State Library of Oregon, and Washington State Library.
Items available through Northwest Digital Heritage span topics, from football<https://nwdh.dp.la/search?q=football> and women's suffrage<https://nwdh.dp.la/search?q=women*+AND+suffrag*> to Tribal treaties<https://nwdh.dp.la/search?q=treaties+OR+treaty>, Black history and culture<https://nwdh.dp.la/search?q=black+AND+culture+OR+African+AND+American*>, Crater Lake<https://nwdh.dp.la/search?q=%22crater+lake%22>, and much more. The content has proven valuable to educators and students doing classroom projects, genealogists researching family connections, scholarly researchers, historians, cultural heritage organizations making exhibits, and other lifelong learners.
The over one million materials include over 60,000 photos from Oregon State Archives' Oregon Scenic Images Collection<https://nwdh.dp.la/search?provider=%22Oregon+State+Archives%22&collection=%22Oregon+Scenic+Images%22&page=1>, 20,000 items from the Oregon Historical Society Research Library<https://nwdh.dp.la/search?provider=%22Oregon%20Historical%20Society%20Research%20Library%22>, 5,000 records from the Harney County Library<https://nwdh.dp.la/search?provider=%22Harney%20County%20Library%22>, 13,000 images from the Salem Public Library<https://nwdh.dp.la/search?provider=%22Salem%20Public%20Library%22>, and nearly 2,000 materials from the Five Oaks Museum<https://nwdh.dp.la/search?provider=%22Five%20Oaks%20Museum%22> in Washington County.
The collections in Northwest Digital Heritage are also included in the Digital Public Library of America<https://dp.la/> (DPLA), which helps bring this unique and local Northwest content to a national audience. More than 5,000 institutions throughout the nation have contributed over 50 million records to the DPLA to date.
"Being able to search one million records for primary sources documenting the human experience in the Pacific Northwest is an incredible opportunity for those interested in history," says Katie Henry, Oregon Heritage Commission Coordinator. "The three Northwest Digital Heritage partners know these are only a fraction of cultural materials held by hundreds of organizations across Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. We look forward to working with existing and new partners to continue growing this incredible resource."
In addition to helping make this resource available, the Oregon Heritage Commission, State Library of Oregon, and Washington State Library assist heritage organizations across the Pacific Northwest. Such assistance includes:

  *   Training, resources, information, and guidance on digitizing and making collections accessible online;
  * Grants and funding opportunities; and
  *   Hosting organizations' online collections.
Northwest Digital Heritage is made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the State Library of Oregon and Washington State Library. The Oregon Historical Society invites applications to the position of Library Director
The Oregon Historical Society seeks a visionary library and archive professional with a passion for providing leadership for collections stewardship, broad public access to library collections and digital resources, building visibility and resources, cultivating relationships, and community engagement for the position of Library Director. The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker with a proven record for collections management, project planning, outreach, fundraising, developing and managing a complex budget, and directing staff and library operations, as well as a solid grounding in Pacific Northwest and/or US history.
The Library Director will lead an experienced and dedicated team of professional librarians, archivists, and public historians to drive mission-related projects and priorities supported by OHS's strategic plan, including three special projects currently underway and a fourth in the final planning stages:

  * Citizen(s) Yasui, a two-year CLIR grant-funded collaborative digitization project with Densho will broaden access to the library's extensive holdings originating from the Yasui family of Hood River, Oregon.
  * Portland Digital History addition to the Oregon History Project website will provide an online public resource on the people, places, and events that inform the history of Portland, Oregon based on the unique collections of OHS's research library and museum.
  * Architecture, engineering, and design collections project to bring the library's flagship design archive to a high standard of collections care and access.
  * Improvements to library collections storage at OHS's offsite storage facility envisioned for the successfully completed The Next 125 capital campaign.
OHS's research library is committed to providing broad access to its collections for teaching, learning, and research, both onsite in our beautifully renovated downtown Portland library and online through robust digital collections and digital history websites. The library holds the largest collection of archival and published materials relating to the history of Oregon, including the historical regions of Oregon Country and Oregon Territory. Our collections serve as a foundation for scholars, teachers, students, and the public to research and reflect on our state and regional history. The resources and staff of the OHS Research Library play a significant role in fulfilling OHS's mission to "preserve our state's history and make it accessible to everyone in ways that advance knowledge and inspire curiosity about all the people, places, and events that have shaped Oregon."
The Oregon Historical Society is a private non-profit organization chartered in 1898 as the state's historical society. OHS is dedicated to making Oregon's long, rich history visible and accessible to all. Our research library, museum, digital platforms, educational programming, and historical journal make Oregon's history open and accessible to all. We exist because history is powerful, and because a history as deep and rich as Oregon's cannot be contained within a single story or point of view.
