Proclamation on the Value of Native Culture and Arts Issued by the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums (ATALM)

On Nov. 5 the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museum (ATALM) issued the following proclamation:
For countless generations, Native peoples have shaped this continent’s story through art, language, ceremony, and community. The songs, designs, stories, and teachings of our ancestors are not remnants of the past. They are living knowledge systems that continue to sustain and inspire.
Native culture and arts embody connection: to land, to spirit, to identity, and to one another. They are not separate from governance, learning, or economy. Through them, we find balance, belonging, and beauty.
Today and every day, we celebrate the artists, knowledge keepers, and culture bearers who sustain this living heritage. Investing in Native culture and arts contributes to national strength. When Native voices thrive, all of humanity is enriched.
We call upon individuals, institutions, and governments to honor Indigenous creativity through equitable funding, respectful partnerships, and policies that protect cultural rights and intellectual property.
Let it be known that Native culture is not a theme for a single month, but a lifelong inheritance and responsibility. We commit ourselves to preserving, protecting, and promoting this heritage for generations to come.
Issued this November, 2025, by the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums.
The proclamation was issued on ATALM’s Facebook page<https://www.facebook.com/ATALM/posts/pfbid022PvvsPUZUATKFHStnjKazxgvivDz9A2hwr6z2zAETcjiJj2WangyCXz6TfGz1cozl?__cft__%5b0%5d=AZU4Oj9s-n-hOEHsceXOlOGXFINft3mVuBGcQGFRvZPUstKRTz36VRHyzvLTj4MdHJOn6d18FghQLXxrXDAXX_0aVqJXdTHuXibbYbJKlvnq-T_garDsQO_bd1Q-7mNPgxN50HDChmmdnq_Tw-wHuEVEffmq5SoWxzapM5VUHqN3_V0ISoB41cWJXliwZRR0lwA&__tn__=%2CO%2CP-R> but you can learn more about the organization here<https://www.atalm.org/>.

Your cabinets are full. History isn’t getting any shorter. The Valentine Museum in Richmond, Virginia, has spent the last six years undertaking a full-collection refinement project that has freed up shelf space, found better homes for artifacts, increased knowledge of what they do have and can commit to keeping, and created a plan for regular reassessments and refinements in the future. This virtual workshop will provide an in-depth review of the process from start to finish: inventorying, deaccessioning, documenting, processing, and final object transfers.
