Leick, the museum was once the home of Captain George Flavel, a noted bar pilot on the Columbia River and prominent businessman. Listed in the National Register in 1951, it features six unique fireplace mantels and a tower that once offered the Captain a 360-degree view of Astoria and the Columbia River. <P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none"><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Tahoma">The National Register-listed <st1:City w:st="on">Spokane</st1:City>, <st1:City w:st="on">Portland</st1:City> and <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Seattle</st1:City></st1:place> 700 steam locomotive will pull the Express on Dec. 2, 3 and 4. Built in <SPAN style="COLOR: black">1938, the 700 pulled the famous Empire Builder until 1947, and then pulled a passenger train from <st1:City w:st="on">Portland</st1:City> up the Columbia River Gorge to <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Spokane</st1:City></st1:place> until 1956. The locomotive retired in 1958 and sat on display at <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Oaks</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Park</st1:PlaceType> in <st1:place w:st="on">SE Portland</st1:place> until restored to operational capacity in 1990. <o:p></o:p></SPAN></SPAN></P>

<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none"><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Tahoma">The Southern Pacific 4449 will pull the Express on Dec. 9, 10 and 11. <SPAN style="COLOR: black">Built in 1941, the 4449 is the only remaining operable "streamlined" steam locomotive of the Art Deco era. It pulled Southern Pacific "Daylight" coaches from <st1:City w:st="on">Los Angeles</st1:City> to <st1:City w:st="on">San Francisco</st1:City> over the scenic <st1:Street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">Coast Route</st1:address></st1:Street> and then on to <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Portland</st1:City></st1:place> until 1955. Also retiring to <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Oaks</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Park</st1:PlaceType> in 1958, 4449 saw new life when restored in 1974 to pull the 1976 Bicentennial Freedom Train throughout the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">United States</st1:country-region></st1:place>. </SPAN><o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

Doyle-designed H. Russell Albee house from 2 – 4:30 p.m., Dec. 11 at 3360 SE Ankeny – just off East Burnside – <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Portland</st1:City></st1:place>. <o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

Doyle by Philip Niles, historian and author of “Beauty of the City: A.E. Doyle, <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Portland</st1:City></st1:place>'s Architect”. Built in 1912, the Albee house is one of southeast <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Portland</st1:City></st1:place>'s most significant historic homes. Located adjacent to <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Laurelhurst</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Park</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>, this Georgian mansion retains many original details, including fine woodwork, and stained glass by the Povey Brothers. <o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

Russell Albee and his role in shaping the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Portland</st1:City></st1:place> of the 1910s and beyond. Albee played an influential role in progressive era politics and the development of <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Portland</st1:City></st1:place>'s park system. <o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>
