<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none"><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Garamond; mso-bidi-font-family: Tahoma">After three years of documentary and archaeological research, the Southern Oregon University Laboratory of Anthropology has discovered the location of the Battle of Hungry Hill, also known as the Battle of Grave Creek Hills, in the remote mountains of southwest Oregon.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none"><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Garamond; mso-bidi-font-family: Tahoma"><o:p> </o:p></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none"><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Garamond; mso-bidi-font-family: Tahoma">A team led by Professor Mark Tveskov that included Daniel Edgerton of the U.S. Army Center of Military History, Robert Kentta of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, Chelsea Rose of the SOU lab and other scholars discovered the Rogue River War battlefield. Their work included combing document archives in Washington D.C., Seattle, Wash., Berkeley, Calif., and elsewhere, as well as field surveying by SOU students and community and tribal volunteers.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none"><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Garamond; mso-bidi-font-family: Tahoma">“In 1855, more than 500 Native American warriors, pioneer militiamen, and U.S. Army dragoons engaged in a desperate battle for control over Southern Oregon," said Tveskov.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>"Despite being the largest battle of the Rogue River Wars and one of the largest of the Indian wars of the American West, the details of this battle have, until now, been lost to history, and the location of the fight forgotten.” <o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>
