For the 10th year, Portlanders will celebrate Halloween by walking among the gravestones in historic Lone Fir Cemetery. The Tour of Untimely Departures presents guided tours Oct. 31 of illustrious cemetery “residents” played by local actors
telling the life-and-death stories. This year’s unfortunate deaths involve a cesspool, suicide via hot air balloon and a forensic experiment where doctors thought that, by removing the eyes of the deceased, they could view the last image the person had seen.

The event is a joint endeavor by nonprofit Friends of Lone Fir Cemetery and Metro, the greater Portland area’s elected regional government, which owns and operates 14 historic cemeteries. The event is a way to prevent what had become a
night of vandalism in the cemetery located on Southeast 26th Avenue between Southeast Morrison and Stark streets.

In addition to two tour routes, sections of the cemetery will be marked so that cemetery staff and visitors can easily locate graves. Last year, more than 1,500 people toured the cemetery on Halloween night. There will be two different
45-minute tour routes. Guests can elect to go on one or both tours.

Cemeteries interest some people only on some days such as Halloween or Memorial Day, but for Oregon Heritage cemeteries are an every day interest. To help others with interest in cemeteries, it has created more than 10 guides to assist
people and organizations operating or interested in cemeteries. These
easy-to-use guides cover topics such as state laws pertaining to historic cemeteries, cleaning cemetery markers, tips to avoiding vandalism, funerary folk art, gravestone symbols and more.

A conference of diverse people and organizations with an interest in cultural heritage media and its changing use will take place May 11-15 in Eugene. Proposals for presentations are due Oct. 31.

Conference organizers say the media world is in a state of flux because of developments in audiovisual technology and a widespread exploration of and experimentation in new media. Professional disciplines such as archaeology and education
are searching for the best uses of media to convey their messages and information to students and other members of the public. Educators are testing new ways to put film productions in front of students, diversifying the ways by which they learn from film,
video and audio programming.
