Hi Lynda,

Thanks for you interest. Here is my understanding of the situation. 

Way back when the Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries a state
organization (that manages the historic cemetery list) was the Oregon
Pioneer Cemetery Commission and it was legislatively mandated to the
maintain the list of pioneer cemeteries. The Oregon Historic Cemeteries
Association (the private, nonprofit) offered plaques and the early ones
may have stated it as a pioneer cemetery. Later the Commission chose to
include all historic cemeteries, not just those for pioneers and changed
its name and the designation. All the listed pioneer cemeteries were
transferred to the historic cemeteries list. So, as far as I know, there
is no longer a pioneer cemetery list.

I would recommend that you have the property added to the county and
city historic resources lists if it meets their criteria.

Beyond that is the National Register listing, which can be tough for
cemeteries and takes about a year to complete. Let me know if I can be

I was wondering if you could tell me where I might research getting a
cemetery qualified as a pioneer cemetery.  I am interested in taking on
the Clackamas Cemetery, which is on the historic list, but not the
historic register, and not the pioneer register.  There are numerous
pioneers buried there and that is evidenced on some of the stones -  a
missionary that came out in 1845, etc.  

I'm just getting started, so any advice from anyone within our group
here would be most appreciated.
