Volunteer, Cemetery Workshops
Scheduled July 20-21 in Burns

Oregon Heritage, part of Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, will offer workshops July 20-21 in Burns on strengthening volunteer programs and cemetery maintenance and repair. In conjunction with the workshops, the Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries will also meet in Burns. All of the events are free and open to the public.

The “Building a Strong Volunteer Program” workshop will be offered from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. July 20 at the Harney County Chamber of Commerce, 484 N. Broadway Ave. Volunteers are helpful workers and great advocates. Workshop participants will learn tips to develop a strong volunteer corps, keep volunteers engaged, and work effectively with volunteers.

On July 21, Oregon Heritage will be at the Burns Cemetery near the intersection of Highways 395 and 20 to lead a cemetery maintenance and repair workshop from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.. The free workshop will address marker cleaning, leveling and repair.

The Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries will meet at the Chamber of Commerce at 1 p.m. July 20. Agenda items will include current projects and upcoming plans. The commission will invite public comments. State law established the seven-member commission to maintain a listing of all historic cemeteries and gravesites in Oregon; promote public education on the significance of historic cemeteries; and help obtain financial and technical assistance for restoring, improving and maintaining their appearances.

Join the Commission on Historic Cemeteries at 4 p.m. for a tour of the Burns Cemetery with the Harney County Historical Society.

Oregon Heritage offers technical support, grants, and other services to organizations working in heritage and historic preservation. Oregon Heritage includes the Commission on Historic Cemeteries, the State Historic Preservation Office, the Oregon Heritage Commission and the Oregon Historic Trails Advisory Council.
