Years ago when we started cleaning our families headstone I looked on line how to clean them. There is a whole site set up on preservation of headstone. They said do not use hard cleaners on the stones. Many of the stones are made of porus stones and hard cleaners will do more harm to the stone than if they were just left.
I also was working with at couple cemeteries preserving veteran's headstones. I was told that years ago the grounds keeper at one of the cemeteries believed in pressure washing the stones. He ruined more stones.
What we use is mild soap that will not harm the stone or grass around the stone and scrub brush then we rinse it off with clear water.
Soap mixture
1/3 cup of mild cleaner
Add water to make one gal.

Ernie -
On Facebook are some people that I met this summer via the AGS conference and their primary job is preservation, repairing and cleaning stones in the upper New York Region.
Or - go the AGS website and you may find articles or people who may be able to assist you further.
The Facebook site is "Gravestone and Taphophilia."

Kuri,
A member of our cemetery asked me if CLR cleaner mixed with water can be used to clean grave markers? I haven't heard of it and my limited Internet search says it is a household cleaner
Thanks,
Ernie
