Volunteers are Needed

The 36th Annual Conference of the Association for Gravestone Studies
will be held at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon on June 18-23.
If you are interested in volunteering to help, there will be a volunteer
meeting on Friday, April 26th at Oregon State Parks, 725 Summer Street,
NE in room 124B at 9:30. If you are unable to come, but would like to
help contact Judy Juntunen, rycraftjuntunen at aol.com.
Conference week is packed with interesting tours, classroom sessions,
lectures, and workshops. Since this is the first AGS conference in the
West since 1999, a number of sessions and lectures focus on the west
from the keynote address about Chinese immigrants in Oregon to a film
and discussion of the community history in Portland’s Jewish cemeteries
to the influence of Euro-American culture on tribes in Northeastern
Oregon.
Of concern to all of us is what we can do to protect our cemeteries
from vandalism. The defense and response to vandalism is the topic for
both a classroom session and an evening lecture. Need help in your
cemetery, there is a session focusing on how to engage public
participation in caring for cemeteries.
The classroom session of the Cemetery Preservation/Conservation will be
offered twice—morning and afternoon—on Thursday. Even if you don’t want
to do the fieldwork portion of this workshop on Friday, there will be
lots of valuable information in this session.
More information is available on the Association for Gravestone Studies
website, http://www.gravestonestudies.org/conferences.htm Registration
forms can also be found on the website. Registration is due by
Wednesday, May 15, 2013. Late registrations will be charged an
additional fee.
