Friends,

Some good news. The VA is proposing to lessen its stringent next of kin requirements for deceased veterans whose service ended before World War I. That means that cemeteries and organizations such as the SUVCW, would have standing to request a military headstone for an unmarked grave when no next of kin can be located. We would still have to document military service.

The proposed regulations are in a public comment period until December 1st. I am not sure when they will be formally approved and how long before they go into effect. Hopefully sooner than later.

You can leave a comment about the rules here: http://www.regulations.gov/#!documentDetail;D=VA-2014-VACO-0020-0001
