Outstanding! When I was working on the GAR plot at Eugene Pioneer Cemetery I found probably a half dozen of those GAR stars in the bushes or in the storage shed. They are actually flag holders and have loops on the back to hold a flag stick. A little light cleaning and some rust encapsulating paint and they are ready to go back on the grave. I always tried to put them close to the headstone to stay out of the way of the landscapers and I also set them on concrete to try and deter theft.
Job well done.

RESEARCHER’S DISCOVERY MOVES CIVIL WAR GRAVE MARKER

The curator of the Lane County Historical Society and Museum found in its collection something that looked like a rusty garden stake. After identifying it for what it actually was, she conducted research that enabled it to be transferred to a more appropriate home. Read her story in the newest Oregon Heritage Exchange blog .
