Join the Missouri Flat Cemetery volunteers and the Southern Oregon
Historical Society on Sunday October 16, 2016 from 11a-1p for a walking tour
of the history of this cemetery, the families that rest there, and the
exciting times of the Applegate gold rush in the 1800s.
The Missouri Flat Cemetery is in the middle of the Applegate Valley's wine
region, not far from the Josephine County line. It's a lovely, shaded
cemetery with graves dating from 1876 when residents farmed, ranched and
mined for gold rather than grew grapes. Chuck Lewman knows something about
almost everyone buried there and is related to most: Slagle, Wooldridge,
Davidson, Kubli are all well known names in the area.
The Missouri Flat Cemetery has had to defend its borders in contemporary
times, as newer technologies challenged but did not change historic surveys.
Some gravesites are unmarked, though most are mapped and well maintained
thanks to a core group of volunteers.
The Missouri Flat Cemetery is located on North Applegate Road near its
intersection with Northside Road, Kubli Road, and Slagle Creek Road. Coming
from the Ashland-Medford area, take 238 through Jacksonville to Applegate,
and take a right onto North Applegate Road to pass the Applegate Public
Library. The Missouri Flat Cemetery is not far from Wooldridge Creek
Vineyard, Slagle Creek Vineyards, and Troon Vineyard. Meet at the main gates
of the cemetery. A new walking guide to the cemetery will be available,
produced by Southern Oregon University thanks to funding from the Oregon
Commission on Historic Cemeteries.
