<DIV>The IRS recently posted a list of 3,733 Oregon nonprofits with revoked<BR>tax-exempt status stemming from a failure to file annual returns. The site offers a tip<BR>sheet on automatic revocation and what to do if your organization’s<BR>tax-exempt status was revoked. It also features a podcast that explains<BR>a nonprofit’s obligation to file an annual return and how revocation<BR>is automatic if it does not file for three consecutive years. <BR>Nonprofits that re-apply may write a letter to the IRS requesting<BR>reinstatement of their tax-exempt status retroactive to the date of<BR>their original tax-exempt recognition, but the IRS will grant that<BR>request only if it determines that there was 'reasonable cause' for the<BR>nonprofit to have missed the filing deadlines.
