Outstanding! When I was working on the GAR plot at Eugene Pioneer Cemetery
I found probably a half dozen of those GAR stars in the bushes or in the storage
shed. They are actually flag holders and have loops on the back to hold a flag
stick. A little light cleaning and some rust encapsulating paint and they are
ready to go back on the grave. I always tried to put them close to the headstone
to stay out of the way of the landscapers and I also set them on concrete to try
and deter theft.

The curator of the Lane County Historical Society and
Museum found in its collection something that looked like a rusty garden
stake. After identifying it for what it actually was, she conducted research
that enabled it to be transferred to a more appropriate home. Read her story
