Dear Partners,
Today is World AIDS Day. Each year, on December 1st, we remember the lives of people who have died from an HIV-related illness. We support those who live with HIV, and those who are disproportionately affected by HIV infection. We recommit to our shared responsibility to work together locally and globally to end the HIV pandemic. We also acknowledge all those who came before us, fighting for justice and equity over the past 40 years.
Here’s what you can do to commemorate World AIDS Day:
· Learn more about Oregon’s new five-year plan (Spanish<https://static1.squarespace.com/static/581d04a2f5e231b25f875be2/t/6387ce5547ceab72604838ba/1669844575765/OHA_EndHIV_2022_ProgressReport_FINAL+Spanish.pdf> and English<https://static1.squarespace.com/static/581d04a2f5e231b25f875be2/t/63869a90a69e574c78ba5ef1/1669765784399/OHA_EndHIV_2022_ProgressReport+FINAL+English.pdf>) to End HIV/STI in Oregon, which focuses on diagnosis, prevention, treatment and responding to end inequities.
· Read Governor Brown’s World AIDS Day proclamation<https://www.oregon.gov/oha/PH/DISEASESCONDITIONS/HIVSTDVIRALHEPATITIS/Documents/World_AIDS_Day_December_1_2022.pdf>.
· Review our data dashboards<https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/oregon.health.authority.public.health.divison/viz/EndHIVOregon/EndHIVORHome> to see how HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, such as syphilis and gonorrhea, are affecting different communities in Oregon, including yours.
· Get tested:<https://www.endhivoregon.org/#testing1> Testing is easy, but only 37% of adult Oregonians have ever been tested for HIV. Ask your doctor, find a test site near you<https://gettested.cdc.gov/>, or order a self-testing kit<https://takemehome.co/> to test at home.
· Find out if PrEP<https://www.endhivoregon.org/#prevention-1> is right for you: PrEP, a daily pill or periodic injection, is 99% effective at preventing HIV. It’s covered by most insurance plans and can be obtained through the more than 350 medical providers on the Oregon PrEP Directory<https://www.oraetc.org/prep-provider-list> or at an Oregon pharmacy. PrEP navigators<https://www.oregon.gov/oha/PH/DISEASESCONDITIONS/HIVSTDVIRALHEPATITIS/HIVPREVENTION/Pages/prep-pep.aspx#consumers> can help you decide whether PrEP is right for you.
· Tell someone that treatment saves lives. Many people are still unaware that people living with HIV who are on effective treatment and have an undetectable viral load, cannot transmit HIV to sex partners. This concept is often called U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable). Watch this video<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbLfW29jfUI> to find out more.
· Say thanks to volunteers or donate to partners: Community partnerships ensure that services are designed and led by communities. Through grants and contracts, OHA is working to transfer resources to communities facing inequities. Find a local agency<https://www.endhivoregon.org/#partners-1> in your community and get involved.
Thank you for your ongoing partnership and dedication to ending new HIV/STI infections in the State of Oregon. The End HIV/STI Oregon<https://www.endhivoregon.org/> initiative is for and about everybody.
We have a vision. Imagine an Oregon where … we end new HIV infections. We eliminate health disparities. Everyone with HIV is healthy. Can you imagine it? The time is now.
