Subject: 2022 National DIS Day

On Friday, October 7, we celebrate National Disease Intervention Specialist Recognition Day. This day is celebrated each year on the 1st Friday in October.

Today, we take a moment to acknowledge that Disease Intervention Specialists (DIS), and all those conducting case investigation, remain the backbone of public health in the United States. DIS represent a spectrum of clinical and non-clinical experience, and a wealth of knowledge that strengthens the ever-dynamic world of public health work. They have helped prevent transmission of infectious diseases for more than four decades in this nation. Whether tackling STD/HIV prevention by providing education and referrals, conducting partner notification, or responding to outbreaks and public health emergencies - DIS bring a special set of skills and level of dedication matched by few in the field.

DIS have been tirelessly working on the front line of public health, particularly over the last two years, managing unprecedented workloads, increases in HIV/STDs, and supporting the nation's response to COVID-19 and now, monkeypox (hMPXV).

In Oregon, we greatly appreciate our colleagues who do this critical work. We are deeply grateful for your wisdom, commitment, flexibility, and persistence. Today, we honor all the staff who do disease intervention work, and all that you do in the name of public health.

We feel honored to work alongside such a dedicated workforce.

[To all DIS and case investigation staff, the backbone of public health! Happy National Disease Intervention Specialist Day and thank you! From all of us at OHA]
