<p class="MsoNormal">Please see the attached CDC Health Advisory regarding Monkeypox Virus Infection in the United States and Other Non-Endemic Countries issued on May 20, 2022.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Why is this Health Advisory important for STD Programs?<o:p></o:p></b></p>
<ol style="margin-top:0in" start="1" type="1">
<li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo3">Monkeypox transmission occurs through close contact, including skin-to-skin contact; contact with lesions in the mouth, on the genitals, or around the anus; or via respiratory droplets.
Monkeypox may also be spread through sharing a bed or clothing. Therefore, both close social and sexual contact may result in the spread of monkeypox.<o:p></o:p></li><li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo3">The initial rash of monkeypox may appear in the mouth, on the genitals, or around the anus and mimic the distribution and appearance of rashes associated with herpes, chickenpox, chancroid,
or secondary syphilis.<o:p></o:p></li><li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo3">In the setting of a rash with this distribution, people with monkeypox may present to HIV and STD clinics and/or outreach testing programs.<o:p></o:p></li><li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo3">Globally, some (not all) cases have been identified among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) who report meeting sexual partners on apps and at bars and clubs
in the context of larger social events, like Pride festivals. <o:p></o:p></li><li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo3">Health officials have identified cases in Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Germany, Italy, the UK, Denmark, Israel, France, Switzerland, and Australia.<o:p></o:p></li><li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo3">In the US, 5 cases have been identified, one in MA, 1 in NYC, 2 in Utah, and 1 in Florida.
