<p><span style="mso-bookmark:gd_top">With being in the Governor's pause, I wanted to take a moment to tell you all you are appreciated. So many of our businesses, EarthWISE or not, are implementing out of the box strategies to navigate an unprecedented time.
The balance of keeping everyone well and your business healthy is daunting. That so many of you have shared your challenges and success with me, is truly humbling. As we move through this time please continue to check in with me for help with resources, networking,
or even a place to talk.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="mso-bookmark:gd_top">The holiday season is upon us. This year it will look and feel different from the past. One thing we can strive for is creating additional markers of sustainability and connection with both consumers and staff. According
to the EPA, an <strong>additional one million tons of waste goes to landfills</strong> every week between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. Cardboard, plastic, packaging materials, and food waste are the main contributors to the increased volumes. Together
we can offer solutions that still bring joy to our communities without increasing the waste load.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="mso-bookmark:gd_top"> <img border="0" width="556" height="472" style="width:5.7916in;height:4.9166in" id="_x0000_i1027" src="https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/ORMARION/2020/11/3891253/holiday-waste_original.jpg" alt="Holiday Waste increases 25%"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="mso-bookmark:gd_top"><strong>1. To tree or not to tree?</strong><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="mso-bookmark:gd_top"> If your office or store opts to add a tree... Fact; you reduce carbon emissions while investing in natural capital by purchasing a real tree. Farmers grow trees specifically for the holiday. They plant tracts of land where
these trees grow for about 10 years. During this time, the trees take in carbon emissions and release oxygen into the atmosphere. Look for farms that use little or no chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which drain into local water systems. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="mso-bookmark:gd_top">As for artificial trees made from plastics and synthetic material, they’ll eventually be thrown out and could sit in a landfill for centuries or longer. Real trees can be recycled and reused as mulch and for other environmentally
stimulating uses. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="mso-bookmark:gd_top"><strong>2. Wrap it up?</strong><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="mso-bookmark:gd_top">When possible 100 percent post-consumer wrapping paper. If you wrap gifts for customers or clients, strive to use 100 percent post-consumer wrapping paper imprinted with organic inks. Post-consumer paper is recycled waste
paper, meaning trees weren’t cut down to make the wrapping paper. Another idea for small retailers: Put customers’ purchases in decorative recycled-paper gift bags that can be reused.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="mso-bookmark:gd_top"><strong>3. Let's get the glow!</strong><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="mso-bookmark:gd_top">Decorate with LED lights. If you deck out your store or office for the holidays with lights, make sure they’re LED. Major retailers now sell LED holiday lights and other LED ornaments. According to the U.S. Department of
Energy, LED holiday lights use one-sixth of the energy of mini incandescent lights and 90 percent less energy than the bigger traditional bulbs. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="mso-bookmark:gd_top"><strong>4. The season to recycle.</strong><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="mso-bookmark:gd_top">If you don’t already have a recycling program, the holiday season is prime time to get one underway. Make it a point to use recyclable goods and discuss with staff and customers why. Pay attention to little things like the
cups you serve hot cocoa or coffee in at an event or in the office; encourage people to bring their own.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="mso-bookmark:gd_top"><strong>5. Don't forget the people leg of the triple bottom line.</strong><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="mso-bookmark:gd_top">Eid Milad Un Nabi, Hanukah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, Makar Sankranti, Winter Solstice/Yule, and Las Posadas are all holidays and events that begin in November and run us through the beginning of the new year. Celebrate commonalities,
and provide space to celebrate and share the differences to grow with one another in learning. Foster a workplace where employees feel respected and valued in their holiday traditions. Encourage employees to share their celebrations through stories, decorations,
and foods that they can bring to the workplace. People celebrate a variety of holidays during this time of year, and some people choose to celebrate none.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="mso-bookmark:gd_top"><b>6. Office gifts and exchanges that provide smiles and reduce waste.</b><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<span style="mso-bookmark:gd_top">If you buy gifts, make sure they aren’t creating needless waste. Also, consider buying locally from merchants that sell eco-friendly gifts made by local suppliers or giving gift cards.

<span style="mso-bookmark:gd_top">Make a fun game of most creative eco-friendly wrapping or encourage recycled paper, Furoshiki, or even upcycled newspaper or sheet music.<o:p></o:p></span></li><li class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;mso-list:l2 level1 lfo1">
<span style="mso-bookmark:gd_top">Offer the alternative of gifting to have an office donation to a charity or social justice organization of choice, or host a gift tree for foster children.<o:p></o:p></span></li><li class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;mso-list:l2 level1 lfo1">
<span style="mso-bookmark:gd_top">Create a Green Elephant Exchange. Suggest that instead of gifts we look to doing social or environmental good in the next year. What if everyone brought a sealed envelope that contains a promise to do something good, either
for yourself, another person, or the environment? Someone might bring, "<em>I will go hiking one Saturday in my nearest state park and pick up trash</em>." Someone else might bring, "<em>I will volunteer one afternoon at my local Boys and Girls Club</em>.”<o:p></o:p></span></li></ul>
