<p class="MsoNormal">Since Katie asked for Summer Reading ideas, we thought we would share what we did to launch our “Every Hero Has a Story” Summer Reading program at the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library:<o:p></o:p></p>

</span></span></span><![endif]><span style="font-size:7.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif""> </span>“My Teacher, My Hero” Essay Contest: Before the end of the school year, elementary school students were invited to write and submit a short essay telling
us why their teacher was their hero. After we selected the recipients, we surprised the essay-winning students and their teachers at their schools. The students received certificates and the honored teachers received superhero t-shirts that said “I Teach.
What’s Your Superpower?” This was a great way to recognize teachers as heroes in our community and to promote our Summer Reading program in the schools.<o:p></o:p></p>

</span></span></span><![endif]>Local Heroes Summer Reading Kickoff Celebration: To officially kick-off our Summer Reading program, we closed a street block behind the library and held an outdoor Local Heroes Celebration. We partnered with ten public safety
and military groups including Corvallis Police Department, Corvallis Fire Department, Benton County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, Oregon National Guard, OSU ROTC units, and several search and rescue units. The groups brought various vehicles for the
kids to explore, including patrol cars, a police motorcycle, a fire truck, an ambulance, a marine patrol boat, a military transport truck, a Humvee, a mountain rescue truck, and an animal control truck. In addition, three search and rescue dogs, a sheriff’s
K-9 dog, and three horses and their riders from the Benton County Sheriff’s Office Mounted Posse also attended. This event was a great way for us to honor and partner with the local heroes in our community.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color:#1F497D">Washington County Cooperative Library Services worked with their county commissioners on a summer reading proclamation (attached) and a photo op with the commissioners, library staff, and kids dressed up as superheroes!
If you’re interested in doing something similar next year, their summer reading proclamation may serve as good template to get you started.

<p class="MsoNormal">Hi! I just learned about two things Oregon libraries are doing for summer reading this year that are new ideas to me. Perhaps they’re new to you too!<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Baker County Library hosted “Parents are Heroes” in May to provide parents of young children a preview of the summer reading program, tips for reading and building early literacy skills with their children, a giveaway book, and a literacy
bag. What a great way to let parents know that young children can participate in the summer reading program too—and sneak in an early literacy education session!<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The Dalles Wasco County Library’s grand prize for their K-5 Summer Learning Club is a ride to the first day of school in… a fire truck! This may be a good strategy for getting more boys to participate in and finish the summer reading program,
and it’s a great relationship building activity for the library and the fire department.<o:p></o:p></p>
