<p class="MsoNormal">Early in 2016 I sent out a message asking for suggestions of children’s books that support the idea of grit or growth mindset. Several people responded and a few expressed a desire for me to share my findings. It has been awhile, but I
have been slowly reading through many titles. I had hoped to do more with this list, like annotate it and maybe include some sort of rating system and identify grade levels. However, with a new school year ahead of me, I realize that I am not going to be able
to finish that much detail, and have decided to send out my list of books as is. But consider it a “work in progress.”<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Having said that, I’ll briefly describe what the list contains. There are many picture book biographies, as well as fiction picture books and a few chapter books on this list. Most books have books with characters that show a growth mindset
in some way, at least enough to generate discussion with students on the topic. I believe I only included positive examples of the growth mindset and left out titles with characters who were a negative example (or, one might say, who show a “fixed mindset”).

<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Having read Carol Dweck’s book<i>, Mindset: the New Psychology of Success, How We Can Learn To Fulfill Our Potential</i> over the summer, I understand this mindset and Dweck’s research better than I did when I first asked the question.
Therefore, some of the titles on the list, if I read them again, may not be true to what Dweck describes as a growth mindset. But certainly all books support at least the idea of persevering, learning from failures, and aiming high for one’s goals. If you
are looking for recommended titles on these topics, then this list is for you. <span style="font-family:Wingdings">
