<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto">As many of you know firsthand, many children and teens lack stability, supervision, and good nutrition during the summer. While anecdotal stories abound, an evidence-based case
 to support public library child welfare activities has not firmly been made. Also, awareness of how libraries might address these issues in their communities is not widespread, and differences in opinion exist on the role libraries should play.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto">The rapid growth of library participation in the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program points to shifting attitudes and practices in this area, and also to the challenges ahead. How
 do libraries measure the results of SFSP participation? How does SFSP participation meet the mission of the library? What does successful SFSP participation imply for library involvement in other aspects of child welfare?<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto">To help librarians sort out these issues, we are creating an ad hoc committee tasked with creating a presentation on this topic for the 2018 CSLP annual Meeting.<o:p></o:p></p>
