Ethical considerations underlie numerous aspects of public health practice, ranging from staffing decisions at LHDs to distribution of vaccines during pandemics to media strategies related to sensitive subjects such as obesity. The Public Health Accreditation Board's Standards and Measures Version 1.5 includes a requirement for a formal system for and record of ethical deliberation. Since 2010, NACCHO has partnered with the CDC Public Health Ethics Unit to provide public health ethics education and training for local health departments.</p><p style="margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px"> </p><p style="margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px">The webinar will highlight a set of recommendations designed to help LHDs build a formal infrastructure for addressing ethical issues. Guest speakers from two LHDs will also share examples of ethical challenges they face, and a panel of public health ethics experts will provide live technical assistance. Panelists include Drue Barrett, PhD, Public Health Ethics Lead, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Alan Melnick, MD, MPH, CPH, Health Director/Health Officer, Clark County (WA) Public Health; Dr. Leonard Ortmann, PhD, Ethicist, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and Matthew Stefanak, MPH, former Health Commissioner, Mahoning County (OH) Public Health Department.
