MOBILE – Can You "Forward" a Text Message?

Intermediate

I received a text message recently with details about an upcoming party (address, directions, etc.). Instead of copying it or taking a screenshot, I was able to simply forward the text message to my colleague as she was going with me.

It may not happen frequently, but sometimes you receive info via a text that you need to share with others. Here are a few examples of when forwarding can be helpful.

[A person holding and using a smartphone with both hands. There is a blue arrow near the phone pointing to the screen, labeled "Forward Text Message." The background is blurred and appears to be an indoor setting.]
· Sharing Information - Let others know about news, event details, or updates.

· Spreading Alerts - To keep others in the loop about urgent situations like emergencies, weather warnings, or safety concerns.

· Professional Communication - Share work-related information or instructions with colleagues or team members.

· Providing Proof - Maybe to give evidence or context in a discussion or dispute by showing the original message.

· Just for Fun - To share jokes, memes, or funny stories with friends or family.

CAUTION: Remember, don't put anything in a text message that you would be embarrassed if someone (other than the intended recipient) would see.

iPhone: How to Forward a Text Message

On most versions of iPhone, in the Messages app, you can forward one (or more) messages in a conversation.

1. With the Messages app on your iPhone open, inside the text that you want to forward, touch and hold. A new window, with choices, will open. Tap More.

2. The message should be selected with a checkmark to the left of it. If you want to include more than one text, tap the others so they are checked.

3. At the bottom right of the screen, tap the Forward arrow.

4. Enter the recipient's Name.

5. Then tap the blue Send button.

Android: How to Forward a Text Message

Because there are many models of Android devices, look for options similar to these steps. In the Messages app, find the one you want to forward and then:

1. Press and hold the message and then tap the three vertical dots in the top right corner (or showing near the message).

2. Select Forward from the menu.

3. Choose a contact to send the message to. If you don't see the person you want to forward the message to, tap New Message and select or search for the recipient's name.

4. Add your own note to the top of the forwarded message (or at the end if you'd like) and select the Send icon.

Communication: Texting

Create a positive tone in texting

It is so easy to be curt and abrupt in a text if you aren't careful. Creating a positive tone can be easy and welcomed by the receiver. Here are three things you can decide to do.

1. Don't skimp on words, using only the bare minimum. Put some extra niceties in. The less you know someone, the more you need to do this. Sure, if you're communicating multiple times a day, brevity is OK. And even then tossing in some extra words can be well received.

2. Remember to say please, thank you, and you're welcome ... yes, even in texting! Not every time, but sprinkle these in occasionally to improve the tone of your communication.

3. Use names ... yours and who you're talking to. Yes, usually (but not always) the person receiving your text knows who you are, but it is still a friendly, respectful gesture to use one's name. Adding yours at the end adds a personal touch at times.

These are not hard and fast rules that you do every time! Use your discretion and identify situations that will benefit from this more positive tone approach to texting.
