OFFICE - Clever Shortcuts for ©, ™, ® Symbols
Novice
[Colorful lock icon with a trademark symbol artfully in the center]
Have you ever found yourself searching for a symbol to use to protect something you've developed? Maybe it was for a copyright or a trademark. You don’t need them often, but when you do, wouldn't it be nice to have an easy insertion method?
If you look up online for a quick shortcut (as we did) you may find articles that say to hold down the Alt key while typing 0169. What? How are we going to remember that?!
I found a shortcut that actually made sense ... and one that I could remember!
If you're working in many of Microsoft and Google programs or apps, such as...
· Word/G-Docs
· PowerPoint/G-Slides
· Excel (not G-Sheets)
· Outlook/(not Gmail)
…you can insert special characters like the copyright symbol ©, a registered mark ® or the trademark symbol ™ with a few keyboard strokes.
TIP: While these techniques do not work on web pages, you can put them in a Word or Google Docs file and then copy and paste them into online for things such as a social media post, a blog comment or online form.
Here are several different ways you can insert symbols.
Shortcut for Copyright ©
When working in an Office Suite document, you can type a "formula" if you will. Here's how:
[Copyright symbol in red]
1. Type an opening parenthesis: (
2. Type the letter: C (for copyright)
3. Type a closing parenthesis: )
4. Press the space bar (this step required in some cases)
NOTE: As soon as you type the last parenthesis, the copyright symbol will appear.
TIP: Do you see the easy way to remember this? It's like you're making the symbol with your keyboard ( c ). NOTE: No spaces within the parentheses.
You can use the same pattern for Trademark and Registered:
Shortcut for Trademark ™
[Trademark symbol in blue]
1. Type an opening parenthesis: (
2. Type the letter: TM (for Trademark)
3. Type a closing parenthesis: )
4. Press the space bar (this step required in some cases)
Shortcut for Registered ®
[Registered symbol in green]
1. Type an opening parenthesis: (
2. Type the letter: R (for Registered)
3. Type a closing parenthesis: )
4. Press the space bar (this step required in some cases)
The easy way to remember this tip is that you are simply using the open and close parentheses to simulate the circle.
NOTE: If for some reason you really want to show the letter "c" within parentheses, and you don't want it to convert to the copyright symbol, as soon as the symbol appears, press Ctrl + Z (or the Undo icon) to "undo" the automatic insertion of it. You'll be left with the (c) as you typed it.
And to get a bit more techie … if you're working with HTML code, the following text can by used to create the symbols:
HTML Code for Symbols
· For the Copyright symbol ©: ©
· For the Trademark symbol ™: ™
· For the Registered symbol ®: ®

Communications: Grammar
Is it lie or lay?
I finally figured out how to remember when to use lie vs. lay. In fact, I have two ways because sometimes it's fairly easy to know ... and other times I don't have a clue which one is right.
Does a hen lay an egg ... or lie an egg? (I think this one is obvious. It's lay.)
Less obvious to me...
· Do you want to lay down for a rest ... or lie down?
· Do kids lay on the grass ... or lie on the grass?
Both of these should be lie. Why? Because you use lay when you have an object that you are placing somewhere. You use lie when you don't. In the two examples above there is no object being placed.
That makes sense, but hard to remember when we need it.
Another Way to Remember
So a trick is to think about another definition for lie (to tell a falsehood). We never have trouble knowing when to use that definition of the word, right?
And it's easy to note that when you're using the word in that way (telling a lie), there is no object involved. Therefore, we can use lie when there is no object in other meanings as well, regardless of the definition.

Where it Gets Messy
OK, now we have a way to know when to use lie vs. lay. But what happens when it's past tense. Then its tricky! Because the past tense of lie is lay. The good news is that the requirement for not having an object being involved is the same. ... for all tenses of the verb lie.
