MOBILE – How to Change Phone Settings to Share Video & Images More Easily

Intermediate

[A black iPhone with a film strip and a photo icon on a blue and orange gradient background]

If you like to takes pictures and videos on your phone ... and share them with others ... you'll want to know the settings that make it fast and easy to do, right?

This tip is especially important if you're an iPhone user because in the Apple world, their default file formats aren’t always the easiest to share.

iPhone videos often save as .mov files and images as .heic which can cause compatibility headaches when sending them to non-Apple users or uploading them to certain websites.

The good news? With a few quick settings changes, you can make your iPhone capture photos and videos in more universal formats, making them easier to download, share, edit, and use anywhere.

Even greater news ... if you're an ANDROID user, you’re all set! These devices already use the most compatible video and photo types.

Why Change Your iPhone Settings?

Apple uses High Efficiency - HEVC (.mov) format for videos and HEIF (.heic) for images because it saves storage space and maintains quality. While these formats work great in the Apple ecosystem, they’re not always compatible with older devices, certain computers, or some online platforms. Switching to more common formats like .mp4 for videos and .jpg for photos ensures maximum compatibility without the need for conversion.

TIP: Want to know more about this topic? See this Tech-Talk article<https://opiayfbab.cc.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001fUZiONWH5IDn0EnC-3pZO_MPkAFeIZ8-yc3nR0W8x9dmk-NkHOTtgbAbqE21UnqHW2LfqqIze_DeuUXq7k-kuDQ-RcSOTa_Jf9UHIJrsX8--a4yM1Kd10_emMKVKDiiQncOedaMtk2Ul5Q_a5RMGW26qx-15bv1Hpy2EvkRJZ1nW-nTJrawVZbNHNXbQyhbQXG46GjyLi5j6AiQPygjXJg==&c=33guGLMj8DJ1I6lGppieD1qfwIOfElDXNlk1tYE2QPg-oBaKb3a-xg==&ch=EzHi1XVSWQxwOrWMHKJMfmHrfK2RGZ7SfzpvuQODJWUTORVwshzbiA==> that explains more about HEIC files.

How to Change BOTH Video and Image File Formats on iPhone

WAIT! Read the full article before making this change to see more options.

Again, by default, your iPhone records video in the High Efficiency format (HEVC), which produces .mov files and images in a .heic format. You can change this to Most Compatible, which uses H.264 and saves in the .mp4 format for video and .jpg for pictures.

To make this change, on your iPhone, for both formats at the same time:

1. Open Settings.
2. Scroll down and tap Camera.
3. Tap Formats.
4. Select Most Compatible.

TIP: This change only affects NEW videos you record and pictures you take going forward, not the ones already saved in your photo app.

[IPhone Settings app showing how to set Camera photo format to Most Compatible for JPEG saving in the Formats section]

How to Share Photos in a Universal Format Without Changing the Settings

If you want to keep the High Efficiency formats (to save space) but still share in a universal format when needed:

[Screenshot of iPhone Photos settings with Transfer to Mac or PC set to Automatic]
· Open Settings.
· In the Search bar at the top type in Transfer to Mac or PC, then select Automatic

OR from Settings:

· Scroll down and choose Apps.
· Find and tap Photos.
· Go to the Transfer to Mac or PC section. (It's in light grey font.)
· Select Automatic.

This way, when you transfer photos or videos to a computer, your iPhone will automatically convert them to .jpg and .mp4 formats. However, when you share directly from your device (e.g. text a photo to someone) the original formats remain.

Bonus: Change Video Resolution and Frame Rate

[A camera settings screen showing video resolution and frame rate options 1080p HD at 30 fps is selected]

If you also want control over video quality and file size:

· Open Settings.
· Tap on Camera, then Record Video.
· Choose your preferred resolution and frame rate (e.g., 1080p at 30 fps for smaller files, or 4K at 60 fps for higher quality).

Changing your iPhone’s camera settings to use more universal file formats can save you time, hassle, and extra conversion steps. Whether you switch completely to Most Compatible or just set up automatic conversions when sharing, you’ll enjoy an easier experience sending, uploading, and using your videos and photos anywhere.

Communications: Mutual Respect

Say this is difficult situations

We all have those times when we're in a conversation with someone, or in a team meeting, when things are not going as well as we would like, right?

The tendency we have is to interject a voice of reason or to present a new idea. (That's because studies have shown that we spend 80% of our talking time giving information.) It's what we do, but it's not always the most effective.

Here's another approach to consider: use one of the two phrases below. Both convey a healthy respect for what is being said in a neutral fashion. One takes the conversation in a new direction; the other clarifies so that everyone is on the same page. (Click on each link to get specific examples in the Tech-Talk articles.)

TIP: First log into Tech-Talk.com with your organization's username and password! (For most folks, scroll up to find them above the webinar list.)

"Let me build on that. ..."<https://opiayfbab.cc.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001fUZiONWH5IDn0EnC-3pZO_MPkAFeIZ8-yc3nR0W8x9dmk-NkHOTtgTP-C0KbTk-wAbibPbU3SgUXf4lwk49ZXxmYl6bwwgJEW4KT-cBJu0NOjJ3P-1r-0X3BbfcOztX4b2N1PO5Dh6cNlhcXut5zopV-OIUpPIT20fc7wwU6a4yeQuOpzQQHjn4Sm3IKTm5XZZtk477fTNQ=&c=33guGLMj8DJ1I6lGppieD1qfwIOfElDXNlk1tYE2QPg-oBaKb3a-xg==&ch=EzHi1XVSWQxwOrWMHKJMfmHrfK2RGZ7SfzpvuQODJWUTORVwshzbiA==>

"Let me test my understanding. ..."<https://opiayfbab.cc.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001fUZiONWH5IDn0EnC-3pZO_MPkAFeIZ8-yc3nR0W8x9dmk-NkHOTtgTP-C0KbTk-wDFPfOuqxZEkQJCda0LY6dCoOUbHxTn1uz6AY7EfSnLD9D0SiH3CcKMV0C_0pQOqNpFaGw8af9fjQza0s-5xbM997hgAYCduMm7Dj37_w2TtYEi5570_zZaPwUZt0bb73&c=33guGLMj8DJ1I6lGppieD1qfwIOfElDXNlk1tYE2QPg-oBaKb3a-xg==&ch=EzHi1XVSWQxwOrWMHKJMfmHrfK2RGZ7SfzpvuQODJWUTORVwshzbiA==>

These two phrases inherently give a time-out. They tend to cleanse the pallet of the brain. It shows that you are actually listening and hearing. It tends to distill some of the animosity or confusion. It reboots the conversation.

When you use these techniques, you are building trust and gaining respect. It helps you take control of difficult situations.
