How Can You Use "Hashtag Holidays"?

Once you find a holiday that intrigues you, put that hashtag in a browser window or a social media site's search bar to see current conversations. These can be informative, entertaining and useful.

[May calendar with themed icons—teacher, nurse, hamburger—offers creative ways to highlight holidays while promoting events on social media.]

Here are Some Examples from 2024…

March 10th - Popcorn Lovers Day

Tie in a "popcorn tasting theme" in children's story hour or adult book club.

[LEGO figure in a popcorn costume at LEGOLAND California with a backdrop of trees and a fence]

May 2nd – World Password Day

This example gives you the opportunity to provide educational awareness around a topic or cause. In this case, online security. When we typed in #WorldPasswordDay into a Facebook search box, there were serious posts, along with humor…

[A man in a suit facepalms. Text above reads, "Enter password" repeatedly, ending with "New password can't be old password.]

[Cupcakes topped with white frosting and bacon crumbles cool on a rack offering creative ways to delight at events]

December 30th – National Bacon Day

Bacon, bacon, bacon. They say "everything's better with bacon!"

Create an event around cookbooks. Have you ever had a maple cupcake with bacon crumbles on top? Or a peanut butter and bacon sandwich? Yum!

The idea is to really think outside the box and use these "National Days" to create memorable experiences.

Communications: Writing

Is it capital or Capitol?

Ever get stuck trying to figure out whether to use capital or capitol? You’re not alone! These two words sound the same but mean different things. Here’s an easy way to tell them apart.

Capital: The All-Purpose Word. Capital has a bunch of meanings. It can be a city where the government is based (like Washington, D.C.), money used for investments (venture capital), big uppercase letters (capital letters), or even something really important (a capital idea).

Capitol: Just One Thing. Capitol is much simpler—it only refers to a building where a legislature meets. The U.S. Capitol (with a capital “C”) is in Washington, D.C., and each state has its own capitol building too.

Easy Trick to Remember. Think of the “O” in capitol as a dome—just like the dome on a capitol building! If you're talking about money, cities, or importance, go with capital. If it's a government building, capitol is your word.

With this little trick, you’ll never mix them up again!
