In addition to the strong representation on several award committees, Oregon was also mentioned a few times during this morning's Youth Media Awards presentation.

The John Newbery Medal for the most outstanding contribution to children's literature was awarded to All the Blues in the Sky, written by Renée Watson. The book is published by Bloomsbury Children's Books, an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing. Renee grew up in Portland and is an alum of Jefferson High School.

American Indian Youth Literature Awards were established to identify and honor the very best writing and illustrations by and about Native Americans and Indigenous peoples of North America. Selected titles present Indigenous peoples in the fullness of their humanity in the present and past contexts. This year's winners include:

  * One of the five Picture Book Honor Titles, including Fierce Aunties!, written by Laurel Goodluck [Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nations and Tsimshian Tribe of Alaska], illustrated by Steph Littlebird [Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde], and published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing.

  * Six Middle Grade Honor Titles were announced, including The Summer of the Bone Horses, written by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve [Rosebud Sioux Tribe], illustrated by Steph Littlebird [Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde], and published by Amulet Books, an imprint of Abrams Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Abrams.

The most winning-title (that I've got on hold!) this year is Legendary Frybread Drive-In: Intertribal Stories, edited by Cynthia Leitich Smith, which was honored with the 2026 Printz Award, and is one of four Odyssey Honor Audiobooks, and is the American Indian Youth Literature Awards Young Adult Winning Title.

Congratulations to all the winners<https://americanlibrariesmagazine.org/blogs/the-scoop/2026-youth-media-award-winners/>!

Thanks,

Wendy
