We send our withdrawn disc-format items to GreenDisk, a TechnoTrash recycling vendor: https://www.greendisk.com/ . They guarantee secure destruction of electronic media, and the resulting metal and plastic is either shipped to EPA granted facilities or resold on the commodity market.

They offer full-service options, wherein they cover shipping and provide packaging in which to send materials off, as well as self-service options in which you cover packaging and shipping.

It's not the cheapest disposal method, but we've been working with them for a number of years and have been pretty satisfied overall.

Subject: [Libs-Or] Discarded CDs

We are wondering what other libraries do with audio CDs they discard. We give a local public library the cases and sleeves to but aren't sure what to do with the CDs we no longer need or want to keep (these are expired audio recordings of continuing legal education sessions so probably not of interest for a library to add to their collection). What do other libraries do? Or are there any libraries that would like ours?
