PSLA Legislation Committee has organized an efficient procedure for its
members
to invite their local state legislators to their school libraries. The
purpose
of the visits is to:<o:p></o:p></span></p>

Inform legislators about the importance of school libraries in helping
students
achieve academically,<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p style="margin-left: 1.5in;"><span
style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";">2.
Show them school library facilities and the learning that takes place
in them,<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p style="margin-left: 1.5in;"><span
style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";">3.
Illustrate the new roles that school library media specialists play in
teaching, integration of technology, and providing professional
development for
teachers, and to<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p style="margin-left: 1.5in;"><span
style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";">4.Advocate
for more financial support and state requirements for school libraries
and
staffing.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p style="margin-left: 0.5in;"><span
style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";">PSLA
has trained "event planners" who are retired PSLA members willing to
advise and help working PSLA members with the planning and
communication needs
of legislator visits. Event planners will be the liaison between the
school and
the legislator</span><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";">¢</span><span
style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";">s office staff and assist
with
arranging media coverage. These visitations give our state legislators
an
opportunity to meet constituents and students, observe the learning
that occurs
in school libraries, and understand current needs of schools and
libraries in
preparing today</span><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";">¢</span><span
style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";">s students. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
