President’s Banquet Thursday evening with Joe Raiola. <span style=""> </span>Since
joining the Theatre Within Workshop in <st1:state w:st="on"><st1:place
w:st="on">New York</st1:place></st1:state> in 1979, Joe
Raiola has worked as a solo performer, comedy writer, producer,
director and
speaker on first amendment issues. <span style=""> </span>He is
now the Artistic Director of Theatre Within and the creator of their <i>“</i><em><span
style="font-style: normal;">Annual Lennon Tribute</span>”</em>, the
longest
running such tribute in the world. Joe is also MAD Senior Editor, a
title he
insists means nothing since I work at the only place in <st1:country-region
w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">America</st1:place></st1:country-region>
where
if you mature, you get fired. <span style=""> </span>His solo
performances include “<em><span style="font-style: normal;">Almost
Obscene</span>”</em>
and the program he will perform during the banquet dinner called “<em><span
style="font-style: normal;">The Joy of Censorship”</span></em>. In
this
long-running, nationally acclaimed program, Raiola takes an
illuminating,
satiric and at times disturbing look at <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place
w:st="on">America</st1:place></st1:country-region>'s most hotly
debated First
Amendment issues, including the dramatic effect of 9/11 on free speech.
You
will not want to miss this engaging and hilarious presentation.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The Keynote Speaker this year is Justice Betty
Roberts. Betty Roberts was the first woman on the Oregon Supreme
Court,
and was also the first woman on the Oregon Court of Appeals" Oregon
Court
of Appeals. Roberts' recently published memoir, <i>“</i><em><span
style="font-style: normal;">With Grit and By Grace: Breaking Trails in
Politics
and Law</span>”</em>, is the story of her remarkable life, and it
describes,
first-hand, the hard won accomplishments that have marked the career of
one of
Oregon's most important leaders. In her keynote session Thursday
morning,
Justice Roberts will share stories from her career and from the time
spent
writing and researching her memoir. In honor of her audience, Roberts
will introduce us to the intricacies of her research process and the
many
librarians she met along the way-all the more reason that this session
promises
to inspire. Do not miss it.</p>
