BCR, Safe Sound Archive Form Partnership<br>

AURORA, COLO., March 17, 2009 - BCR and Safe Sound Archive, a leading provider of audio preservation digitization, have partnered to give libraries and cultural heritage institutions the ability to easily preserve their historic, obsolete or damaged audio recordings.<br>
<br>
Safe Sound Archive's expertise in the preservation, conservation and/or restoration of audio media provides the assurance that any size project will receive the same treatment. They can recover and reformat many types of media, including virtually all analog formats, as well as early and current digital formats. <br>
<br>
"As libraries and other cultural heritage institutions expand their digital initiatives into their sound collections, BCR's Digital & Preservation Services began looking for quality programs to meet our member needs. Safe Sound Archive is one of the leading audio preservation formatting organizations in North America," stated Liz Bishoff, Director, BCR Digital & Preservation Services. <br>

Safe Sound Archive staff consults with collection owners to help them evaluate their needs, assess priorities and consider options, and the company's on-site storage facility provides climate-controlled storage of collections for long-term care or for the duration of a reformatting or digitization project. <br>

For 21 years, Safe Sound Archive has provided audio recording services, new recordings, storage and reformatting to such institutions as the Boston Public Library, the Museum of Jewish Heritage, the North Carolina School of the Arts, the Church of Latter-day Saints, the University of California at Santa Barbara, Pacifica Radio Archives and Columbia University Libraries.<br>

Safe Sound Archive's founder, George Blood, was a peer reviewer for BCR's CDP Digital Audio Best Practices, Version 2.1 document (<a href="http://www.bcr.org/cdp/best/digital-audio-bp.pdf">http://www.bcr.<wbr>org/cdp/best/<wbr>digital-audio-<wbr>bp.pdf</a>). He notes, "Audio preservation is unfamiliar to most librarians and archivists. Most information available on this topic is oriented toward people who already have some background in the subject and are often fairly (to very) technical on the subject. The Digital Audio Best Practices guide from BCR is an excellent introduction to the main concepts, with clear and specific recommendations. I recommend it frequently to institutions as they prepare to confront their important documents captured in sound."<br>
<br>
Safe Sound Archive also was a primary partner during BCR's CDP project, Sound Model: Collaborative Infrastructure for Digital Audio (<a href="http://www.bcr.org/cdp/projects/soundmodel/index.html">http://www.bcr.<wbr>org/cdp/projects<wbr>/soundmodel/<wbr>index.html</a>). Safe Sound Archive converted more than 2,400 hours of audio for 30 cultural heritage institutions in 10 western states. <br>
