This sounds interesting so I thought I would share it with you. I wish I could get to Texas by tomorrow morning to be there but maybe I will be able to catch some of the webcast.

Sent: Thursday, May 14, 2009 1:42 PM
To: Deliberate Listserv
Subject: Open the Government

On May 15, the LBJ Presidential Library, the LBJ School of Public
Affairs and Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas will host a
full-day conference, "Open Government on the Internet: A New Era of
Transparency," featuring notable leaders in the government
transparency movement including presentations (in persona and
virtually) by former Senator Bill Bradley, White House CIO, Vivek
Kundra and Texas Comptroller, Susan Combs.

In addition, we will have panel presentations from organizations such
as: OpenCongress/Sunlight Foundation, billhop.com, Development Seed,
Sunlight Labs, League of Technical Voters and several TX state
representatives and policy-makers.

As the federal government struggles with implementing President
Obama's directive that government be more transparent, participatory,
and collaborative, we in Texas are striving to be at the forefront of
this movement with our Transparent State Budget efforts.

Even if you do not live in Texas, I suggest you take some time to
watch portions of our webcast either live or later. I believe that the
push for transparent data will require information / community
champions who can help communities take advantage of the wealth of
information that will eventually be at their fingertips. Transparency
and data alone cannot solve the problems that plague our communities.
We will need dialogue and deliberation, and information professionals
like librarians more than ever. I also do not think that I am
overstating the case that this is an opportunity for us to make our
public institutions and our knowledge indispensable assets in helping
communities that are hurting during this economic downturn. In short,
I see lots of lemons waiting to be squeezed into delicious lemonade!

For more information about this event and a complete schedule, go to: http://texasforums.wordpress.com/2009/05/13/open-the-government-webcast/
