The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) voted unanimously (5-0) to extend a stay of enforcement on testing and certification of many regulated children’s products under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). While enforcement of specific CPSC testing requirements has been stayed, the products must still comply with all applicable rules and bans. The Commission’s press release explains the products that are affected by this stay of enforcement.

Emily Sheketoff, executive director of the ALA Washington Office, and Jessica McGilvray, assistant director for the ALA Office of Government Relations, participated in a meeting yesterday with CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum. The CPSC informed them that the commission must respond to a directive Congress included in the appropriations bill that funds the CPSC. Under the directive, the CPSC must assess enforcement efforts of section 101(a) – the section impacting libraries – including difficulties encountered. They must also release recommendations for improvement to the statute. The CPSC must respond to Congress no later than the January 15.

The ALA is hopeful that this response to Congress will include further guidance for libraries.
