  Secretary, Arne Duncan, met with the AASL Board of Directors, newly elected
  board members, and elected leaders from state school library organizations
  affiliated with AASL  at the ALA Conference in Washington, D.C.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

  font-family:"Georgia","serif";color:black'>AASL President Cassandra Barnett
  opened the informal session with a statement which emphasizes how school
  libraries and school librarians have taken the lead in the implementation of
  the five key priorities set out in <em><span style='font-family:"Georgia","serif"'>A
  Blue Print for Reform</span></em>:<em><span style='font-family:"Georgia","serif"'>
  The Reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.</span></em><o:p></o:p></span></p>
  <p style='line-height:140%'><span style='font-size:8.5pt;line-height:140%;
  font-family:"Georgia","serif";color:black'>Secretary Duncan responded to
  President Barnett’s comments with praise for what libraries and librarians
  have achieved. He emphasized the need for the school librarians to actively
  push Congress for the passage of the jobs bill, “use your loud librarian
  voices” for lobbying, he said. If the bill doesn’t pass there will be a
  severe level of devastation for education, including library positions.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
  <p style='line-height:140%'><span style='font-size:8.5pt;line-height:140%;
  font-family:"Georgia","serif";color:black'>The Board asked a number of
  questions during the half-hour session and one key message from Secretary
  Duncan was that librarians have to get out the message of when they have been
  successful. He understands that librarians engage students on an individual
  basis and open the world to students in ways that are important to the
  educational process.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
  <p style='line-height:140%'><span style='font-size:8.5pt;line-height:140%;
  font-family:"Georgia","serif";color:black'>However, librarians have to get
  out the word of where they are successfu and where they make a difference.
  Librarians need to tell how they are changing student lives and demonstrating
  integrative educational experiences. The bottom line for educational reform
  will be to raise the bar for success and close the gap between those who are
  and are not achieving. Secretary Duncan indicated that the pockets of
  educational success that he sees around the country are very often tied to
  successful library programs that engage students in learning in a meaningful
  way.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
