<a href="http://librariesoforegon.org/">Libraries of Oregon</a> website and approved the use of unallocated FFY2012 funds for five LSTA projects. In addition, the Board heard a report from the State Library Reorganization Steering Committee and discussed Benchmark

Oregon State Library is pleased to announce the second lecture in our 2013 Spring Lecture Series. On Wednesday, March 20, in Room 103 from 12:00-1:00, Professor Kimberly Jensen will present, “Oregon’s Doctor to the World: Esther Pohl Lovejoy and a Life in
Activism.” Esther Pohl Lovejoy was the second woman to graduate from the University of Oregon Medical Department in 1894, served as Portland City Health Officer, and was a leader in both the 1906 and 1912 campaigns for women’s suffrage. Lovejoy developed important
skills in the public health and suffrage movements in Oregon and expanded them in her path-breaking work in medical humanitarianism relief from 1919 until her death in 1967 as chair of the American Women’s Hospitals. Most disease, suffering, and death, she
believed, were the result of wars and social and economic inequities, and she was determined to combat those conditions through organized action. Kimberly Jensen received her Ph.D. from the University of Iowa and is currently Professor of History and Gender
Studies at Western Oregon University. In addition to her newly published book, <em>
<span style="font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"">Oregon’s Doctor to the World: Esther Pohl Lovejoy and a Life in Activism</span></em> (Seattle: University of Washington Press, 2012), she is also the author of
<em><span style="font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"">Mobilizing Minerva: American Women in the First World War</span></em> (Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 2008), and co-editor, with Erika Kuhlman, of
<em><span style="font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"">Women and Transnational Activism in Historical Perspective</span></em> (Dordrecht, The Netherlands: Republic of Letters, 2010). She is a member of the

Support Staff Division of the Oregon Library Association (OLA) and the Oregon State Library are offering financial assistance to library support staff applying for certification in the American Library Association's Library Support Staff Certification (LSSC)
Program. The LSSC Program offers library employees the opportunity to achieve recognition for their experience, enhance library service, and increase skills and knowledge in areas like the foundations of librarianship, technology, and communication. The LSSC
Program is funded by a grant to ALA from the federal Institute for Museum and Library Services, and managed by the ALA-Allied Professional Association. The Registration Assistance Awards of one-half of the registration fee are part of this grant. The Support
Staff Division of OLA and the Oregon State Library will be offering four Registration Assistance Awards this spring. The Awards are for $175, one-half of the LSSC registration/application fee. Successful award recipients will be asked to pay the remainder
of the registration fee with their own funds or funds obtained from other sources. An application form to apply for the Registration Assistance Awards is available from the Support Staff Division of OLA on their
<a href="http://www.olaweb.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=319">
website</a>. The deadline to submit the application is March 15, 2013. Support staff from all types of libraries are invited to apply. The recipients of the Award will be chosen by a random drawing on March 16th. National assistance is also available, please

21st. Governor Kitzhaber, President of the OCRG Rae Hail, State Librarian MaryKay Dahlgreen, Public Services Librarian Elke Bruton, and veterans from the Salem area were part of the dedication ceremony. Talking Book and Braille Services is very proud to have

<p><span style="font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"">Elke Bruton, Public Services Librarian at the Oregon State Library Talking Book and Braille Services was awarded the Julie Klauber Award. This award is given to the person who works with Keystone
Library Automation System (KLAS) in their daily job functions and shows outstanding service to their library. KLAS provides a quality integrated library system for libraries including talking book libraries, resource centers, and associations. Through Elke’s
tenure at the State Library, she has streamlined functions and provided new means of serving our patrons more efficiently. As part of the award, Elke will be attending the KLAS User’s Conference in Chicago.

Library of Congress, the National Agricultural Library, and the National Library of Medicine will implement a new cataloging standard, Resource Description & Access (RDA), on March 31, 2013. RDA builds on the work of the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, Second
Edition (AACR2) and is based on the conceptual models of the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR). The Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) will also implement the new standard for authority records on March 31. Libraries will begin
to see more catalog records with authorized access points and descriptive information that are based on these updated instructions. One of the most noticeable changes will be a significant decrease in the use of abbreviations. Local libraries outside of PCC
are free to make their own decision about when to implement RDA rules in their local catalogs. State Library cataloging staff will begin creating RDA test records after July 1, 2013 and anticipate implementing RDA for original cataloging in late 2013 or early

newest district library, Ione, started its life in November, 2012, with the passing of its tax levy. The district was formed in May, 2012. Library service of some kind has been offered for the last 80 years in Ione, mostly on a volunteer or small budget basis.
Located in western Morrow County, and encompassing the school district area, the library is starting to automate its catalog and upgrade its services.</span><span style="font-size:11.0pt"><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<a href="http://librariesoforegon.org/passport">Oregon Library Passport Program</a>, a statewide patron-initiated reciprocal borrowing program, is off to a great start! Launched in January 2013, the program now has 88 participating libraries and branches and
is continuing to grow. Sponsored by OLA’s Resource Sharing Committee, the Oregon Library Passport Program recognizes that library service ought to mirror the way Oregonians live, work, shop, and play, and reduce barriers to library service. The underlying
premise is that cardholders of legally-established libraries ought to be able to use other legally established libraries and vice versa. Libraries are opening their doors to patrons of other participating libraries, where they can use their local library card
as their passport to libraries across the state. This addresses the long-standing goal of sharing resources between libraries that has been reflected in past OLA strategic plans. If you would like more information about the program, or sign up your library
