First Look introduces new data from the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002, collected in the summer and fall of 2012 when most sample members were 25-26 years old.

The analyses examine students’ educational attainment; students’ financial aid received and subsequent debt; income and financial indicators; initial workforce experiences; and civic engagement.

Findings of particular interest include that among those who began their postsecondary education within 3 months of high
school completion, 42 percent had earned a bachelor’s degree and another 11 percent had earned a master’s degree (or higher) by 2012; among those who began their postsecondary education 13 or more months following high school completion, 6 percent had earned
a bachelor’s degree and another 1 percent had earned a master’s degree (or higher) by 2012.

Many high school sophomores in 2002 with subsequent postsecondary enrollment as of 2012 (40 percent) reported borrowing $0 in student loans, while nearly half (49 percent) reported borrowing between $0 and $50,000 in student loans. An additional 11 percent
reported borrowing $50,000 or more in student loans.

A smaller percentage of those who had completed a bachelor’s degree or higher reported having lost a job since January 2006 (19 percent) than did those with a high school credential only (40 percent), or those who had not completed high school (45 percent).
