 remember that the new Oregon Science Standards (NGSS) will be phased in so that districts can implement changes in local curriculum, provide appropriate professional development for teachers and administrators, and provide students with opportunities to learn
 the content, practices, and cross-cutting concepts prior to assessment.  Oregon students will continue to be assessed on the Oregon 2009 Science  Content Standards via OAKS Science until a new science assessment that aligns with the newly adopted standards

<u><a href="http://www.nextgenscience.org/next-generation-science-standards" target="_blank">Next Generation Science Standards</a></u> (NGSS), a new set of voluntary, rigorous, and internationally benchmarked standards for K-12 science education, were released. 
 Oregon was one of 26 lead states that worked with Achieve and the standards writers to develop the NGSS.

<p class="Default"><span style="font-size:11.0pt; font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif""> </span></p>
<p class="Default"><span style="font-size:11.0pt; font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"">On Thursday, March 6, 2014, the Oregon State Board of Education (SBE) voted unanimously to adopt the NGSS as the new Oregon Science Standards.  The adoption includes the

grade level middle school science standards sequence</a> unanimously recommended by the Oregon Science Content and Assessment Panel that was developed under the leadership of the California Science Experts Panel.  The Oregon SBE Chair and Members are incredible
 supporters of science education (and the NGSS).  It was a joy to see the unanimous support for these standards and for providing a high quality science education for all Oregon students.

<p class="MsoNormal">Oregon was privileged to work with an incredible group of dedicated, talented, and passionate educators and community members serving on the Oregon Science Content and Assessment Panel, who did the hard work and provided the alignment crosswalks,
 proposed timelines, and critical recommendations to the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) and SBE.  You can view the list of panel members and the materials for each of their meetings on the webpage created for the
<a href="http://www.ode.state.or.us/search/page/?=4057" target="_blank"><span style="color:blue">Oregon NGSS review process</span></a>.  The alignment crosswalks and transition/implementation timelines provided to the SBE are going through a final editing review
