<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto">Mary Markland has been named Librarian of the Guin Library at the OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) in Newport, Oregon. She began her new position on May 18. A welcome reception
for Markland will be held on Thursday, May 28 at 4:30 pm in the Guin Library. The reception is free and open to the public. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto">Markland was formerly a librarian at the University of North Dakota Health Sciences Library. She earned a BS in Biology with a French minor from Iowa State University, Ames IA,
and an MA in Library and Information Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is the third Head Librarian in HMSC’s 50-year history. Markland succeeds Janet Webster, who retired in January 2015 after 25 years in the position, and Marilyn Potts
Guin, Librarian from 1976 until her death in 1989, for whom the Guin Library is named.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto">“The OSU Guin Library is central to HMSC’s collaborative, interdisciplinary culture of marine research, especially as OSU launches the Marine Studies Initiative,” said Bob Cowen,
HMSC Director. “We look forward to an expanded role for the library and I am excited to have Mary join us now, bringing her perspective into the planning process.” <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto">The welcome reception and open house on May 28 is a chance for community members to meet Markland and learn about the Guin Library and its special marine science collections. The
Guin Library, which is open to the public M-F from 8am to 5pm, also hosts an impressive art collection and a special exhibit for HMSC’s 50<sup>th</sup> anniversary, “Deep Roots.”<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto">The Guin Library is located on the OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center campus in Newport. It is accessible via HMSC’s West Entrance on Marine Science (OSU) Drive, just before the
