<p class="style10"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"">At the October 16, 2015 meeting of the Oregon State Library Board, it was decided that the next Board meeting will be in early January rather than in December as previously planned.
 Legislation which makes changes to the State Library Board, HB 3523, passed in the 2015 legislative session, and will take effect on January 1, 2016. The Board will adopt temporary administrative rules as directed in HB 3523. The meeting is scheduled for Friday,
 January 8, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Oregon State Library in Salem.</span><span style="font-size:11.0pt">

 and the Oregon State Data Center co-hosted the annual Census Data users meeting last month. About 50 statisticians and policy analysts from a variety of state agencies attended the half-day workshop at the library, which was focused on poverty and economic
 data. Training also included a presentation on the planning process for the 2020 Decennial Census. Attendees learned that test runs for the 2020 Census will soon begin in Houston and Los Angeles and will explore the use of mobile apps by enumerators.

 Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI) has been publishing a variety of reports since the agency’s founding in 1937. From fossils to mining to earthquakes to geologic maps, the publications cover the breadth of Oregon’s geology. Paper
 copies, and later, CD or DVD copies, were available at DOGAMI’s main office and field offices, distributed to
<a href="http://www.oregon.gov/osl/GRES/Pages/OrDocs.aspx">Oregon Documents Depository</a> libraries, and were also available for purchase from DOGAMI.</span></span><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif""><br>

<span class="style101">In 2001, the U.S. Bureau of Mines scanned all of DOGAMI’s large-format maps, but not the accompanying text reports. DOGAMI scanned the reports. Once that was done, says Deb of Schueller of DOGAMI, “It was an easy decision to scan the
 rest of DOGAMI’s publications.” Staff scanned documents as time allowed, completing most by 2007.

<span class="style101">Since 1992, DOGAMI publications had been sold through the Nature of the Northwest Center in Portland, but the center closed earlier this year. “It then became imperative to offer all DOGAMI publications free online” says Schueller.

large collection</a> of DOGAMI publications. Most are available for loan, including paper copies of maps through the 1990s.</span><br>

 major purpose of OSLIS is to help students learn how to do research. The OSLIS Learn to Research model includes
<a href="http://elementary.oslis.org/learn-to-research">four steps for elementary</a> students and
<a href="http://secondary.oslis.org/learn-to-research">six steps for secondary</a>. The
<a href="http://oslis.org/oslissupport/aboutoslis/osliscommittee">OSLIS committee</a> is continually updating content in the Learn to Research section, and they recently worked with a graphic artist to design posters and bookmarks that outline the research
 process. Three poster sizes are available for download. The link is at the bottom of the Learn to Research landing page for
<a href="http://elementary.educator.oslis.org/learn-to-research">elementary educators</a> and
<a href="http://secondary.educator.oslis.org/learn-to-research">secondary educators</a>. Those landing pages are also the access point for the master list of

<p><span class="style101"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"">Oregon public libraries are critical community partners in addressing the summer learning slide where underserved youth lose reading skills while school is out for the
 summer. As many as 68,735 children and teens read enough during the summer to finish their local public library’s summer reading program. Public libraries also made extra efforts to get underserved youth to participate in summer reading by translating materials
 into Spanish, presenting activities in Spanish, taking summer reading to free summer lunch sites, and reaching out to schools, daycares, and afterschool programs. Children and teens who participate in public library summer reading programs are more likely

<p><span class="style101"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"">The 2016 Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant cycle will be opening in January. For those who have submitted grants in the past, the State Library Board approved
 a new one step process. The new grant cycle will open in January with full grant proposals due on April 15, 2016, OSL Board approval will occur in June and approved grants will start on July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017. To aid in the new process, grantees
 will have an opportunity to submit their draft proposals in March for review and comment by the LSTA Advisory Council and the Library Support and Development Division staff. So be thinking about those projects that will align and support the goals of the
<a href="http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/LSTA/lstaplanfinaljune27.pdf">LSTA Five-Year plan</a>. For more information, please contact
