Subject: [Heritage] Variety of topics available at Oregon Heritage Conference

Have you ever wanted to convince someone, or maybe an organization, that heritage was important? Have you ever dreamed about becoming a developer of historic buildings? Have you wanted to dig for information about Oregonians not documented
in traditional historical resources? Or understand metadata?

This year’s
Oregon Heritage Conference will help make your dreams come true as workshops and sessions on those topics and more are included in the three-day program May 4-7 in Salem.

A day-long, interactive and hands-on workshop on May 4 will help you build public support, identify priority issues and develop strategies to communicate effectively. Public officials and veteran advocates will also present their tips and
experiences with advocacy. The workshop’s atmosphere will be real as it takes place in a Capitol legislative hearing room.

Also on the afternoon of May 4, you can get a crash course on adaptive reuse as you work with others to envision turning a historic building into a successful business incubator. Aided by real-world case studies, you will learn the basics
of redevelopment and how to leverage existing historic development resources.

A basic challenge for everyone is finding information about Oregonians not documented in traditional historical resources, such as people who were not in power. Learn from professionals in the “How to Dig for Information” session who have
successfully found that information and brought it into historical narratives.

Finally, you can learn about the importance of creating metadata when you digitize in a session on May 5. Eva Guggemos of Pacific University and the Washington County History Online Project will help you learn the most important metadata
fields, how to create them, how to maintain metadata quality control, and how to train and work with volunteers in creating metadata.

The conference will bring together hundreds of people who love and work with Oregon's heritage May 4-6 at the Oregon State Capitol in Salem. Designed to be interdisciplinary, the conference focuses on all sectors of heritage, such as historic
preservation, museums, archives, libraries, and local and state government. By bringing everyone together in one place, we can begin to realize that our work in heritage is all interconnected, that we have similar problems, and, together, can create better
solutions.

For the preliminary program information, take a look at the
conference webpage. A link to the registration page is also on that page so that you can begin making your dreams come true.

<span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Share your photos of Oregon’s heritage on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter using #oregonheritage.
