<b>Celebrate the library district's 5th birthday Star Wars
style</b><br>
<br>
Nearly six years ago, Hood River County's three public
libraries in Hood River, Cascade Locks, and Parkdale closed.
Thanks to a vote of the people, those libraries reopened on
July 1, 2011, as an independent special district. Hood River
County Library District invites the community to celebrate the
fifth anniversary of the libraries' reopening at its Star Wars
birthday party on Friday, July 1, 5-7p, in the Georgiana Smith
Memorial Gardens. The shindig will feature cake, ice cream, a
cantina band, costume contest, wookie impression contest, and
more.<br>
<br>
There will be activities for all ages to enjoy. Ben Bonham and
his alien band will regale the crowd with favorite cantina
hits. Young children will be sent off on a mission to find the
droids. The best wookie impersonator at the party will win a
fabulous electronic Chewbacca mask. Costumes are encouraged,
as this will be an intergalactic party. The best costume will
net a a remote-controlled BB-8. And of course there will be
cake and ice cream from Mike's Ice Cream.<br>

Hood River County did not always have reason to celebrate its
libraries. The Hood River County Library, a department of Hood
River County, faced severe cuts due to mounting costs and
decreasing revenues for the county. The libraries closed on
July 1, 2010, after the failure of a May ballot measure to
create a special library district, referred to voters by the
County Commissioners. At the November 2010, general election,
the voters of Hood River County approved a second measure to
form a library district, albeit at a lower rate than the first
measure. The newly-formed HRCLD became an independent unit of
local government, with a dedicated tax base devoted to running
the libraries in Hood River County. Now, the libraries are
busier than ever, more more new books, movies, and audiobooks
to check out, more programs to attend, and more services to
utilize than ever before.<br>

Reopening is not the only reason the thing HRCLD has to
celebrate. As of July 1, the library district will become
owner of the Hood River Library and Georgiana Smith Memorial
Gardens thanks to a very generous donation by Hood River
county. Taxpayers can rejoice as well, as the bond that paid
for the 2003 expansion to the Hood River Library will expire.<br>
